I posted this on the technical forum but have not recieved any reply's so far....

When I first drive the car the gearchange from neutral to 1st and 1st to 2nd seems a bit "notchy" sometimes a little grind is heard. But when the car is warmed up the gearbox gets slicker and is OK. I am thinking this could be a gearbox oil problem ?
Any other suggestions ?

Thanks

second gear often used to be notchy on my s2
checked oil level it was ok
changed oil and same problem
changed to semi synthetic and problem went away
try swapping to semi or full synthetic
hope it cures the problem

I'll give the oil a change (when the weather warms up !) first and see how it goes.
The car has only 80K so I hope the synchro's arn't starting to wear. I've heard the box is pretty bullit proof.

Actually the gearbox on 944s 'can' have a bit of a reputation for noise as they get older. Personally I think a lot of the problems are caused by irregular oil changing. The gearbox oild is supposed to be changed every 4 years or 48k miles whichever is soonest, yet when I was looking for both of mine it was surprising the number that had NO record of it ever being done

I change mine every two years to be safe, for the sake of £20 of gear oil versus a rebuild, I know which I'd rather do.

Mine is like that on a cold morning and fine once warm. No noise though. Best change I made was to put swepco oil into it, still notchy when cold but much quiter and after a long motorway run still changes easily. Previously I struggled to change down when on a slip road.
