Anyone tried Dunlop sp9000 Tyres, they seem the only Z rated tyres around at the moment. Size is 205/55/15. Any one any recomendations for W rated tyres, I know I will have to check with the insurance company, but W is up to 168 mph.

Got some and will fit on Saturday - will update from then. Car is used daily so will soon rack up some mileage.
W rated is fine, it's only the V rated you'll need to let the insurer know.

Just fitted SP9000's to mine not really had a good oportunity to test them out yet, but so far I haven't noticed any difference from the SO3's, although I did have the back end out a few times when pulling off from junctions, but put this down to the rears being very worn.

Regards,

Paul.

Got these on mine, they feel as good as the so3's. Found they are best at 24 front, 26 rear.

Not a clue what SP9000's would be like on a chim but i've just replaced the ones on my road slogger with them.
Had them purposely factory fitted when i brought it from new.

Have now had them on a variety of motors and they have proved first class

Fitted 4 SP9000's on my Chim last year. 1st few miles was like an ice rink till the release agent was scrubbed off. I then found that they were excellent. Very strong grip. Well worth the money.

Had four fitted last Sept. Done about 2500 miles no probs at all. As Tonto says, first 20-30 miles are like driving with skis underneath you but after that, spot on.

Anyone else confirm Soufriere suggestion of tyre pressures being 24 front and 26 rear? I`m running mine at 22 front and 24 rear at the mo, but not done many miles yet!

Hi

I have just fitted 4 SP9000's to my 4.0 TVR they are z rated tyres and are just about scrubbed in, like some of the other guys have said they are a bit unsteady at first but now offer plenty of grip. Great in the rain too... well as good as any tyre can !
I replaced the fronts a few months before the rears and was amazed by the front end grip, coupled with a couple of mil left on my rear Conti's, the handling was fun until I got my new rears.
I paid less than £100 per corner, which I though was very reasonable !

The tyres suit the car well, they have a great tread pattern (tyre perv alert !!) and have stiff rim protectors moulded into the sidewall, so make it wife parking friendly.
They are currently runnning standard pressures but may drop them 2psi based on what others have said in this thread.

The speed rating letter represents the top speed that the tyre is tested to, also a higher rated tyre will have better high speed stability, that is why a 1.4 hatchback has tyres that are capable of 149mph in a car that would struggle to see 120mph

Interstingly the following letters apply to speed rating
V = 149mph
W = 168mph
Y = 186mph

ZR = 149mph

Apparently the ZR rating was introduced when car manufacturers started fitting 16" 17" and 18" tyres as standard.

Some usefull info here.www.tyresave.co.uk/tyrspeed.html.It would appear that the ZR rating is over 150/149 mph,but up to an amount depending on which suffix follows the ZR letters

Ive got SP 9000 on the front of mine and toyo proxies on the rear. I would recomend them to everyone.

Front 205 / 55 / 15 with 23 psi Dunlops

Rear 245 / 45 / 16 with 25 psi Toyo

Whoops.... meant to point that out
And you need to scrub 'em in for about 50 miles

I've just had two fitted at the front end and they have made a big difference. Much better hold.

Speed ratings V, W and Y are replaying Z. Z is the old speed rating that indicated 149+ mph. Because cars have got faster and demand more from tyres these other speed ratings are gradually replacing the Z rating. You are even finding that "normal" cars, such as mondeo's are being fitted with W rated tyres.

Some tyres will have written on the tyre wall 205/55 ZR 15 88W. These fall in to the Z rating catergory but are W rated. The 88 number is the loading that the tyre can take, not too much of a problem with a Tiv.

V is not new and no change. W and Y have been around for a few years now and are an economy measure; they are speed rated as mentioned earlier in the thread and the tyres are stamped as a sub-division of Z rating. Z cariies on as before - what else will 200mph cars use? Similarly why use 200mph tyres on a 150 mph Griff when a V or W wil do

W will do, but not V as they are rated to 149 and Griffs (and chims for that matter) exceed this. I have confirmed this with a few insurers, as I'd be after the Toyos if I could, but they only make V rated 205 55 15s.

Currently the only make I can find that meet the size and legal requirements are the Dunlop SP9000.

This is not quite correct. V is OK as long as agreed with your insurance company and as long as it's suitable to the use to which the car is being put. I gather that quite a few people sucessfully use V rated tyres.
