Hi all!
I've got a '96 4L Chimaera and, unfortunately, one of the rear shocks is leaking. I've phoned up the local TVR place (Henley) and they have the Bilstein ones there for a (I thought) rather steep £450 for the pair. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm not bothered about race-tuning a car or anything like that, just shocks that are comparable in quality, ride, handling etc. to the originals...
Any suggestions welcome!
Many thanks,
Dave

I need some new rear springs and shocks - gone rusty and may aswell do change the shocks at the same time. Just bought the car and its recently had AVO's on the front.
Not sure what to get...I can see there are alot of debates about this subject!! I guess I will match with more AVO's but who does the best price and rose jointed or not? the fronts have polybushes...
Leven Quoted £360 ish for rose jointed shocks, eibach springs and new bolts/nuts inc p+p. Peninsula was about £80 cheaper but not rose jointed.
I'm interested by the Protechs aswell but think I should match.

Rust isn't normally a reason to replace springs, but that's your call.
You should always make sure the fronts and the rears match each other, so it's a bit worrying that the previous owner only changed half the springs and dampers. Unless you happen to know the spec of the fronts you've got some detective work to do. You may be lucky and find that you can read the spring poundage off the front springs, if not you have to measure them or treat them as an unknown. One advantage of the cheap and nasty 'one size fits all' AVO valving is that you can use the same dampers with a huge range of spring rates so if they're working OK you should be able to reuse the dampers, but if I were you I'd get new known springs all round and matching AVO dampers for the rear.
If rust is the only reason you're doing this I'd question whether the expense is necessary, but it's your money.

Little Nicky - where'd you get yours? and is that price just for shocks??
Got the fronts from Jules at track car solutions - they were the last pair that he had.
The rears I got from Peter at Roath Garage in Cardiff.
Top deals.
This price was for shocks only - no springs.

Cheers for all the replies - I'll have a word with Steve at Euphoria but it's looking like the AVOs are pretty decent and a set of 4 for £300 ish is a lot better than 2 for £450! Presumably, these can be used with the original springs?
Thanks
Dave
Avo's generally run with 9" springs, yours will probably be 11 &1/4", so I would suggest new ones and anyway hard valving and soft springs don't work too well.

I don't know what your budget is or how important the car's ride comfor and handling is to you, but before you finally part with the cash it's worth mentioning that there is a huge difference between good and bad dampers and generally you get what you pay for. I wouldn't expect much from £75 dampers. If you change the dampers you will quite likely be forced to change the springs because the old ones won't physically fit, but in any case I would advise you to not to use the OEM springs with aftermarket dampers. Make sure that you get the dampers from somebody who is familiar with your car's suspension, there are far too many people around IMO who just pick dampers about the right length and throw them at the car.

My rose jointed Avo's are using the standard springs. Work fine. The dampers have transformed the car, making it much much quicker through the corners. I love em
