Looking add the potential costs of Act twins and induction kit as well as mapable ecu, how come there are not people running quad Dellortos?

i was looking at Guillotine's monster when i was last down at Dulfords and then saw some Dellortos on fleebay the other week, made me wonder why others don't.
v8 plus the sound of carb induction now that is
Andy how much trouble is it keeping the quads in tune?

Wouldn't you need to go down the route of "legal decat" (meaning an old cat exempt engine block & rebuild) to use carbs on a Griff 500? Otherwise there's no way it'll pass the emissions part of the MOT - no closed loop mixture control.

Apache on here used to run a Griff 500 that'd been changed to carbs. Think he did it through V8 developments but could be wrong. Seem to recall that he was quite pleased with it!!

dunno, its always in for somesort of upgrade work so its tuned as a matter ofcourse.

you're right ofcourse, sounds fab...induction roar is nearly as loud as the de-catted exhaust.

also right that emmissions would be an issue, not on mine for the reason stated below, but all is cool with mine.

you'd need some sort of rev limiter as well so it doesn't self distruct!

there was mention of blowback and fire risks. as mine exits the bonnet, have extra filters and are well set up, we have had no issues.

apparently if the catch fire you bury the throttle and they eat the flames

not a problem on a well maintained set up.

Apaches had and eidelbrock set up with one double pumper quad carb (i believe, so emmisions ok)
fits under the bonnet too but not enough fuel for my engine

I know somebody who used to run a Holley with a tendancy for the float to jam under hard acceleration. From time to time they would spray neat petrol straight up into the foam air filter with a fair bit going through that too. You cold see the petrol spraying straight up two or three feet sometimes so the whole car got sprayed with the stuff. Luckily the carb was replaced before it managed to set fire to the car.

don't they do that when the carb is mounted the wrong way around? I seem to remember reading something about that effect..? or is my memory misleading me?

I'll e-mail you the results tonite ROb, it's Mike's car so I'm sure he'll want to tell the story himself

cheers, Joo

What about downdraught injection then?Does it make more power than downdraught carbs?Anyone running this on a griff?

yes mate, I saw this set up on a Morgan 4.6 used for F/Road and track.
Made some SERIOUS numbers...320? from 4.6? something like that!

downdraught inj with throttle bodies. custom job.

Is it something you would contemplate Andy?i.e. it sounds ideal for your type of engine.Or is it very little gain for all the extra(i imagine) outlay?

not at the moment.

staying with the carbs, only thing left is mappable ignition which would improve mid range torque.

but it seems to have enough already! and its very smooth too.
going the whole throttle body way would cost £4K ish for not much more.

and the Carbs sound FAB, as you will hear shortly!

As much as i love the dellortoes, and believe me i do!! you really cant compare them to a good down draught injection system, outright bhp numbers may be very similar i would say that the injection set up prob makes 5 more bhp, but the gain you get in driveability, accelarating out of a corner etc is a massive difference, take an average circuit like donington you would be around 1.5 secs faster on the injection, i no that probably doesnt sound a lot but you would pay a huge amount to make your car that much faster round a circuit if you were racing!! the sound is the same.
And just to throw a huge spanner in the works here!! if you to work out the sonics and pulses inside a plenum, a plenum WOULD make more bhp, the reason for this is no cylinder draws its air at the same time, a typical 48 mm carb flows around 320 cfm of air so each cylinder can draw a maximum of 320 cfm, a plenum that is fitted with even a standard plenum each cylinder will see around 700 cfm of air, the problem becomes that with a plenum you get a lot of reversal of crap in there so each time the cylinder trys to draw a fresh charge it is also drawing a bit of negative charge, and all your sonics and pulses and cream cakes that go on inside a plenum!!

I gained another 35-40 bhp when I switched to 8 throttle bodies.... Which is consistent with the £100 per bhp.

What I also gained was a lot smoother idling, torque which considering it was a pretty wild cam was definitely worth it. The car ended up idling at about 500 rpm just going chug chug chug it was that smooth whereas before it needed around 1100 rpm it was that lumpy.
