Apologies for this really stupid question.

If I take my wi fi enabled laptop (which has no ISP connection on it, but IE as part of the OS - Win XP service pack 2) into a hotel with broadband wi fi... what's the chance of me surfing?

Not sure how this works... If I boot IE on a laptop with no ISP... does it automatically find the wi fi and work, or do I have to configure before hand, and if so, how? ... or do I need my own ISP on thr laptop to make stuff happen?

Thanks

Klutz

You should be fine Steve (famous last words!).

The WiFi service provider is acting as an ISP, and once you have connected to their service you'll be able to browse to your heart's content. Email might be a different proposition depending how your existing email provider allows you to connect to the sending/receiving servers (web based email will be fine though).

Turn on your laptop, make sure the WiFi connection is enabled and then look for the service (View Available Wireless Networks) and connect to it (security tip: make sure you confirm with the hotel the actual name of the service to minimise the risk of connecting to spoofs).

You'll then typically have a web page of instructions to follow (which may include payment or the input of security keys that the hotel have given you).

Good luck!
