Dear Sir or Madam,
This letter concerns an important safety measure affecting your Lotus Elise or Exige, and asks you to arrange with your dealer for a replacement part to be fitted.
On a small range of vehicles, including your own, it has been found that there is a risk that the gear lever may break if subjected to high handling force. In order to assure the highest level of safety, Lotus is undertaking to replace these gear levers with a modified design. To minimise the risk of breakage, it is recommended that this work be performed at an early date.
Lotus sales or dealer records, or data provided by vehicle licensing authorities, indicate that you are the registered keeper of a Lotus Elise or Exige, the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) of which is shown above.
If you are no longer the owner or keeper of this vehicle, please help us by completing the attached pre-paid postcard to advise details of the new owner. Your co-operation in this matter would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
The rectification work will be carried out entirely free of charge, and should take approximately 2 hours to complete. Please contact your nearest Lotus dealer to arrange an appointment to have this work performed at your earliest convenience. Any authorised Lotus dealer will be pleased to carry out this work, but if you should have any queries or concerns, please telephone for assistance: +44 (0)1953608844. Alternatively, e-mail: CustomerServices@lotuscars.co.uk
This recall is carried out under the terms of the U.K. Code of Practice on Vehicle Safety Defects and with the authority of the U.K. Vehicle & Operator Services Agency.
Yours sincerely,

beachbum

I received one as well today. I have seen some comments on this particular problem on the American forum EliseTalk. However, I've not seen anything on PH or heard elsewhere about anyone's gear lever breaking.

There is a link with lots more info:

My main bug bear is that the letter states 2 hour job , but they want my car all day - from 9.30 - 5.30. This will mean getting lifts to and from the garage - all to fit a new gear lever.
