Can somebody explain me what "the votes"mean?

I think its just basically how many people have enjoyed the video out of 5 stars.

For example, my video www.pistonheads.tv/clip733 has had 12 votes, and out of those the rating is 4.4 out of 5. I think its just there to give people an idea of how good the video is, or what they thought of it.
