Can anyone reccomend a router to replace the Netgear WG624 I currently have?
The Netgear drives me nuts, dropping the connection for random periods for no obvious reason.

What do you all use and how stable is it?

Cheers,

Mick

I had a DLink DL713P for a couple of years until it expired; heat exhaustion I think, it did always did get flakey when it got warm. Replaced that with a Belkin which has performed flawlessly ever since.

I have also had success with Linksys kit, which I used to hook up the offices of a company I was involved with a couple of years ago.

Have you tried any firmware updates?

Yup, keep it all up to date, but makes no difference, it will work fine for weeks at a time, then fall over and be a complete dog for a day or so, then work fine again, no obvious reason, but bloody annoying when I rely on it for work.

If you want setup software that doesn't work and to be patronised by a 17 y/o on their "Helpdesk" you could do worse than buy Linksys. But I don't see how.

Thats bizarre - i bought the 624 yesterday becuase my shitty belkin one was doing the same !

Trust me you are better off with the netgear regardless of it dropping off. Signal is better and the web based admin is infinately better !!!

Its a fact of life that wireless drops off at the moment and i dont think a new router will sort it to be honest.

Linksys WRT54GS is a good little unit. Used a few of these and never had problems. They are also highly tweakable.

99% of the time if the wireless drops you can fix it either by config tweaks or eliminating interference...manufacturers dont deliberately make these things so they drop !...theres usually a reason.

The problem is that you need to know what you are doing and understand how they work to troubleshoot them...which is a little difficult when you are on the phone to a foreign call centre

I have an SMC router that gets very warm. Make sure there's free airflow all around the unit - I stand mine on a stapler lying on its side. If I use the stapler and don't put it back under the router then it crashes.

That was the problem with the DLink router of mine which eventually expired. I cured the imtermittant drop outs by standing it on an upturned wire in[tray, so it had plenty of air flow. Cured the dropouts completely.

Sounds like a good stapler... can I borrow it?

The Netgear is standing vertically, as I felt this would give it the best air flow. It's been good again all over the weekend. Just wish I could figure out what changes to make it topple over.

It's the LAN/wireless that falls over, the net connection is fine. The silly thing is the software says it has a good signal etc, but just won't connect/stay connected when it plays up.

I also agree what was said about the foreign call centres, when I had the first router, which turned out to be duff, I had trouble getting them to understand what I was saying when giving my name, never mind trying to explain the problem and symptoms.
