I am looking for sofware to convert AVI files to MPEG and then burn them so I can play them back on my DVD player... I know DVDSanta will do this but it is $29... before I splash out on it can anyone recommend a free one or any alternatives I should look at for a similar price...

thanks

Have a look here

www.vso-software.fr

ConvertXtoDVD is an updated version of my all time favourite DivXtoDvD

Worth the money.

(And personal experience says stay away fom DVDSanta - bastards)

Can't go far wrong than with Nero. It does so much more as well.

Well if you can live with Nero 6.0 instead of 7.o, how about this?

http://aprmedia.com/c_accessories_mor

Includes recode etc and works pretty well.

looks good but will it definately convert AVI to DVD (I cant find anything about AVI files in the information on the Nero site) as this is the main reason I want the software..

Sorry Doddze, my mistake, Nero not what you want for Avi conversion. Would suggest biting the bullet with VSO, it's yet to let me down and on a reasonable speed processor can convert a 700mb file in about 50 minutes.

And my gripe with DVDSanta was a support issue.....am still waiting for them to reply to my e-mail 7 months later.....ho-hum.

Cheers.

Someting like Sorenson Squeeze or Canopus Procoder will do it.
