o no slight knocking noise

my engine has developed a slight knocking noise which seems to come and go when on tick over , if i slightly rev aprox 2000 2500 revs it goes then comes back a bit louder then it goes again. This has only just started to happen so i drove back home imeaditly. Any one with any ideas cheers Jon............

Sorry just loads of questions really, given the limited info:
engine hot / cold or both?
how's the oil pressure? under load or off load or both?
character of sound (low pitched knocking / metalic clicking or chatter etc)? Regular, rhythmic, related to engine speed or irregular or not engine speed related?
With your head in the engine bay (assuming its there off-load) roughly where does it seem to be coming from?
Is it much louder if you take the oil filler off?
How's the engine running generally?
Mileage?
Have you checked the oil level?
ETc etc....

Are you sure its engine knock Check the exhaust is not knocking the chassis first before thinking the worse. Says he hopefully

When in neutral does the noise change if the clutch pedal is down or up at tickover ?

oil was very low it took 2.5 ltr to put dip stick to max. i let it cool down for about 4 hours after toping up oil restarted let her warm up approx 5 min then went fpr a slow drive everythig seemed fine oil presure ok ect after about 10to15 minets stoped at a roundaboutthe noise came back i pulled into a laybye oil presure still norm slight rev it would still knock but then go.

2.5 litres of oil is A LOT! I thought it was 1 litre from min to max. Was the oil level below min? Was the car driven with that little oil in it?

Could be cam related but that's a high-tick sound. A knocking noise could be something more major (like big-end bearings).

Could be serious, could be nothing. Get an expert to listen to it, it's really the only you'll know for sure. You really can't diagnose this sort of problem over the internet.

If its any help,i think it's more like 2 litres between the lines if memory serves.
