You'll find that the insurance companies are quick to write them off, as repairs to GRP tend to be labour intensive, thus costly. The damage is not always as extensive as you would imagine. I've seen a few examples that have been repaired by enthusiasts and you'd be hard pressed to spot the repair. So, still worth a look. Ask for the before and after pics.
Its allright buying one , but then try moving it on , it has to be really cheap, and do most fo the work yourself, the insurance companies are not there to loose money if they where so viable they get them repaired themselves.
Lets put it this way if you want a good Tvr its normal to have to drive good distances and time to view a motor, would you travel good distances to view what could possibly be a problem car.Or hang out for a good car at the right price, and these cars are mostly toys, so there is no rush for most people to have to make a quick purchase.

my chim was a cat D and i have had it for nearly a year now.
No chassis damage, it was all bodywork...i had a few problems with it a while ago...but then people who have brought their cars new have had problems.
I would definately buy another cat D if and when i change my chim.
Also at the rate these cars are being written off it will soon be impossible to buy one that hasnt been a cat D...!!!!!!
