Hi all, never posted on jap chat BUT i have searched for my question and its never been answered straight. A good friend of mine is looking at new shape MR2's at the moment, he had heard of MK1's and 2's spinning all the time, and being twitchy so is unsure about this one. So, is the MK3 any safer handling wise (harder to spin, more forgiving) than its previous incarnations?

Thanks.

at the moment he's driving a merc c200(old model), ive basically already told him that they introduced larger tyres and a LSD (iirc) on the mk3 and its become more predictable, just need some clarification from an owner.

to be honest, they are probably safer than the Mk2... but as Gaz says, you need to learn to drive a mid-engined rear wheel drive car your mate should be fine...

Recently got a MK3 MR2 Roadster, its a '00 - the ones from 03 forward were revised with 16"s at the rear and extra chassis bracing. (Rollerskate as Gaz says! )

I also heard loads of stuff about the handling, but if you treat it with a modicum of respect and learn how it handles by building up, you will be absolutely fine. If you try to drive it like a FWD of course you will come unstuck, but ultimately the grip and balance of the Mid engine RWD make it handle really really well, and the set-up of the car is such that you can be nice and precise with input. It gives a fair amount of warning before letting the rear-end swing, and even then is catchable, although admittedly it does 'go' a little faster than an FR car. It really is fun. My first rwd car.

Its not a rocket by any stretch of the imagination, but because its light (<1000kg)n' low, is a good laugh. The 0-60 is sub 8 sec, and you can get the roof off properly. Also because of the revvy vvt-i engine, can get very good MPG, plus insurance group only 13. The car in the classifieds is amazing, but at 21 i'd really struggle with the insurance. If your mate can get insurance, that has got to be the way to go, its lovely.

Another thing to mention is that Silverstone performance are starting to supply the TTE turbo for the roadster, which has full manufacturer development and support. It gives 200bhp and torque levels similar to a boxter-s as well as a mid-five second 0-60, and is a really fun drive.

I considered a MkIII MR2 when I was looking for my first RWD car to take some strain off the Mini. Looked and felt a lot better than the MGTF and IMHO nicer than the MX 5. Only thing that put me off was the storage space. Insurance was excellent as it was group 13, but they were relatively newish in 2002 and prices were still high. At 21 it was a bit more than I could afford. So I bought a TVR S3 instead. Doing it all again?? I would either buy a MR2 MkII Turbo or a Skyline GTST.

It's all individual taste but I far prefer the Mk3 (having never driven a mk2 or mk3 )
