hung up lap top
Discussion
My daughter has just called ( as she does when things go wrong) to say her HP laptop just hangs up in the HP start up screen. It res[pomds to the 'off' buton, CD tray etc but rebooting won't get past the HP start up screen.
Any ideas?
It is under HP warranty but she has loads of work related stuff on there (not backed up of course!).
Could be a problem with the hard disk, worth getting it looked at professionally if she really needs the stuff off it. I'd be very clear with the HP people about wether they're able to offer any data recovery service before you send it off, if you decide to go that route.
If you slide it out (usually only one or two screws) and it goes straight past the HP screen then complains about the disk being missing, its probably the disk. One thing you could try is the old 'stick it in the fridge' chestnut, for a few hours if poss then put it back in the lappy and try again (a few times). Persistance is usually the key... Or you could get something like this and see if the disk works in that, then you can get the stuff off and just replace the knackered disk.

I had a laptop with a 'fast boot' BIOS option that hides all the startup messages. At one point it developed some minor fault (I can't remember what) and seemed to hang on startup. I changed the BIOS to show the startup messages and it was immediately obvious what was wrong, it was simply waiting for me to respond to a prompt.
