On Friday evening my beauty broke down on the M4, the problem has been solved, but the RAC patrol that came out wanted to get at the battery to connect his torch.

He then disappeared without putting the footwell back together I now have the ECU in the footwell infront of the battery.

Can anyone tell me where this should go?

I'm concerned about slotting it on top of the battery as the metal casing could touch both the negative and positive terminals.

Any help would be much appreciated.

not sure if this is true for all griff's but on my 4.0 the ECU slides vertically between the battery and the side of the transmission tunnel with the wiring looped above it.

hope this helps.

Andy.

PS Should there not be a fibreglass cover on top of the battery? - as mine has one.

On my 500 the ECU was on top of the battery when I opened it up to change the battery when it died recently. There's a flap of carpet that is laid over the top of the battery and under the ECU to give separation. There's no room between the battery and the transmission tunnel on my car. It has been suggested that the flap of carpet should be stuck down with double-sided tape so there is no risk of it moving and letting the ECU touch the battery - good idea but I didn't have any and its been OK for the last 3 years without the tape.

Mine's a 500 and there's a piece of insulating carpet covering the top of the battery. All the relays and the ECU etc sit on top of that. It's a bit of a dog's breakfast to look at, but that's how it is.

I've seen others where there's no carpet and the owner has used some thick cardboard to insulate stuff from the battery.

I've got a digital camera so could take a pic and post it if you like. There's pics on P70 and 71 of Steve's old bible if you have a copy.

Thanks for that, I've seen the flap of carpet, so I'll just sit the ECU on top of that and look out for sparks.
