New GT3 unveiled tomorrow

Porsche lifts lid on highest-revving 911

In addition to the 911 Turbo, Porsche will unveil the new track-oriented GT3 at the Geneva Motor Show tomorrow. The coupé will go on sale in Europe in May 2006 and in the UK on 26 August 2006.

Engine and transmission

Output from the high-revving, normally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six is higher than the 355bhp of the 3.8-litre Carrera S -- it's 415bhp, compared to the Turbo's 480bhp at 6,000rpm. Specific output is a meaty 115.3bhp/litre, with max power arriving at 7,600 rpm; the 8,400 rpm red line is 200 rpm higher than the previous model’s.

The GT3’s improved output results from higher airflow, made possible by the variable intake system with a throttle valve enlarged from 76 to 82 millimetres, optimised cylinder heads and an exhaust system with reduced back-pressure.

The revised six-speed, short-throw ‘box uses lower ratios for second through to sixth for better performance off the line. New for the GT3 is a change-up display, which lights up on the rev counter shortly before the relevant engine speed is reached. It also signals the best time to change gear.

The upshot of Porsche’s tweaks to its flagship rocket is a figure of 0 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds, and 100mph in just 8.7 seconds. Top speed is 194mph.

Chassis

The new 911 GT3 boasts an active chassis for the first time. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) offers a basic configuration, similar to today’s model, that Stuttgart describes as “suitable for driving on alternating road surfaces”. Sport mode switches to harder damping for track work.

The GT3 includes 19-inch wheels as standard and a mechanical limited slip differential. In addition, the new electronic Traction Control – adapted from the Carrera GT high-performance sports car – ensures safe traction under any driving conditions. It features traction-slip and drag-torque control functions, and can be switched off completely if required.

In the UK, you can park a GT3 on your driveway for a mere £79,540. Given what you get, that has to be a bargain.

We'll be reviewing it just as soon as Stuttgart lets us get our hands on one...

I'm currently looking down the back of the sofa in a vain attempt to amass that £80,000.

I absolutely love this car, particularly the centre exit exhausts and the touches of alcantara on the interior.

Not sure the PASM is such a good idea though

Is it going to be, or feel to be, significantly quicker that my breathed on 993tt.?
Will it have that "feelgood" factor they lost a few years ago?? In short, will it make you smile and will you have to respect the car rather than the otherway round?

Sorry, it's not clear. Is the reference to the S just for comparisons sake, because the S model is a 3.8 is it not?

Is the GT3 a 3.8 or the 3.6?

Confused I am...

Looks nicer than the Turbo which is nice, just not keen on the fussy front, but the back is nice

The engine is a develpoment of the outgoing GT3's so it's a 3.6 for sure.

The S is mentioned purely for power comparison i would assume.

Didn't the 996 Turbo do a 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds, this is almost as fast.
Is that specific out put per litre the highest in the world for a non turbo? Or does Honda have it beat? I can't remember.

I hope we are allowed to de spec the hideous lap timing clock that sits on the dashboard.
I believe Weideking came up with this idea, he undermines his credibility imho.

415bhp from a 3.6 is silly power!

And thats 415 proper horses too no doubt, not TVR ones...

I'm with you on this. Looks naff and tacky IMHO. Only problem is that it's part of the sport pack which bring loads of other good stuff with it IIRC...

S2000 is still the king then, just, didn't realise the 360CS was so close though.

and that sounds cool too and porsche is mostly correct on their data! so its a real fast car and mostly reliable for a supercar, I'll take one please(if I had the money)
Well done Porsche very very nice indeed, now raise the speedlimits where roads aloud and take it out for a blast in the past...euhm future ofcorse, thats where things still have to happen

I'd order one tomorrow, if it wasn't for Porsche's piss taking £10k deposit policy.

yep your right, I read it too fast and I'm still in my head with the 911 3.8 I've had 6 years ago( a 911 with the 3.8RS engine) then its even more out a 3.6... but then I think its time too swift the next GT3 to the 3.8 version and 425hp...? the GT3 RS? anyway I still like it
