The red Gel coat finish on my Canam is starting to show some dark patches, looks like it's therefore time for a respray. I have a few options available these are as follows :
1) Paint only the panels that have become patchy.
2) Repaint the whole car in Ford Radiant Red which I understand is the colour of the Gel coat finish.
3) Repaint the car a different colour.
Option 3 is obviously the most expensive if I wanted to have the job done properly as the engine and box will have to come out etc..
I am thinking that if I do have the car repainted now that I won't bother painting the engine bay, as it seems to me that this is a job that could be done at a later stage as there are a few jobs that when funds would permit that might require taking the engine out.
Firstly, if it were your car would you bother to repaint the engine bay?
Secondly if you had the choice today to repaint your car what colour would you choose?

Lastly, although I understand that a used Ultima has a limited secondhand market, would painting the car a non factory colour limit it's appeal to you if you were buying used in the future?
Your opinions would be appreciated before I attempt negotiations with the war office to pursuade her this is a really good idea....

Let's make a decisiontree, you can Paint it:
1 allmost the same color. you have Red?
when you have little stones hitting your car
or scrarch of a child-bike, it is a smaller problem.
2 a different color, and take the stones as a by-product.
a. Customer friendly color, like: red, black etc. That's a Wise decission.
b. Go nuts, like: baby-bleu, lambo-orange, apple-green.
Most of the time these colors stick around for 3-5 years
and then are only for a small group, who love them. Like me.
I would spray the enginebay if it is not black, or the same color.
The police will love the lambo orange, by the way.

A non standard colour will not affect the resale value, as long as it's done well! (In fact it will only improve it)

Agreed as above.
Colour choice is down to you but something radical like lime green would impact resale value.
There is not much too the CanAm bay that is body colour so I would take bits off one at a time and aerosol spray with some neutral colour like Matt black or silver.

When I recently worked on the Silver GTR I covered the engine bay in heat barrier material which tidied up the engine bay considerable and looked very good..... This could quite cheaply be done and would cover all of the Red panel and thus it wouldn't need painting!
I wouldn't go for the Orange purelly as that's the colour I wanted to paint my car.
