Has anyone had the hydraulic lifters fitted to the Essex engine and if so their feelings on the conversion.

Hi
I don't know if it is possible to buy hydraulic lifters for an Essex. If they are available it is probably also required to change the cam as the profile of a hydraulic cam is different compared to a mechanical one.

Why do you want to change to hydraulic lifters? Is it because of noise? The Essex can be a bit noisy in the valve train when the face of the rockers, (the part that push on the valve stem) is worn and make it impossible to adjust valve lash correctly. By grinding the face of the rocker flat on an oil stone it is possible to adjust valve lash precisely and noise is then much reduced.

Regards
Hans

Thanks for the reply Valve. Hate to answer a question with a question - but why noy go for the hyd lifters when they are available during an engine rebuild. I presently run roller rockers on a new valve set up (would you want to grind these?). The one thing i hate doing is setting the "tappets" up (total back braking work). Can understand a high revving (high lift cam)enging requiring "solid" lifters but a Turbo producing max power as low as 4900 rpm?

Hi

I have never seen hydralic lifters for the Essex advertised anywhere, where can you buy these?

Are these meant to be used with the standard cam? Normally the cam profile is different on a hydralic cam, (less rapid accelaration) but maybe it is possible to use the standard one.

Yes, I agree that adjusting valve lash is back breaking work but as it only have to be done maybe once every 2 years, (and then only checked) I wouldn't change to hydraulic lifter only for that reason, and you still have to do the initial adjustment when the lifters are installed. How much is the cost for these lifters compared to new ones?

Except for reduced noise and less adjustment there are no other advantages using hydraulic lifters and performance usually suffers even with the same cam profile, (because of necessary lower tappet accelaration).

Still it is interesting to hear about these lifters and I would be interested to hear where you can buy them.
