A friend of mine is looking for a new car, having had his last one written off. His main criteria are....

Max £4000
Cheap to insure and run
Reliable - has to do a 50 mile round trip every day

He is looking at Rover 200s!! He's in his early 20's so I don't think that this is a good idea - he's not ready for a flat cap yet.

My suggestion is a Smart Car, which i have seen available for just under 4000, but what do you guys think? I can trust you to come up with some more interesting suggestions than a Rover 200!

3 - 4 year old Mondeo? Should come with all the toys and can be serviced at any garage. Autotrader has loads for £3-4k.

late reg cinq sporting (eg P, R). later reg is pretty much reliable and good fun to drive, plus IG3. also 40mpg or more. (avoid earlier mileage as they are pretty poorly built)

How about a pug 206 or a renault clio 16v , I think both have fairly modern looks and cheap to run etc..

If its motorway driving then try a saab - Yeah I know!

BUT - a 94-6 9000 CSE with all the toys in the world, great seats and a 210 bhp turbo 2.3 will come in at around £3200 with full history.

Quick, safe and reliable (so far!!)

My BMW 325i touring cost just £3,750, just had a quote for insurance from e-sure of £382 (depends on your freinds circumstance) Just about to get it serviced (non BMW dealer) £89. See profile for more details, all expenses are listed

Reliabilty - I had a bug with the electric windows but nothing to stop it moving.

I drive all over the country to karting events and it is great for motorways and just popping up the shops. I often have to drive to Birmingham, Dorset, sussex, Northampton etc and back in a day (im SE London) no problem.

If insurance is still high there are some very nice 318i tourings around
