hi, please can someone advise, While im looking for a 911 996..98/98/99 model,,,i have looked at deatils and been checking whats been done/service FSH etc...and it is something Merrit kindly wrote in a thread the other day WHICH VERY USEFUL, GOT ME THINKING,,,..MERRIT WROTE...,,,re RMS,,,-----BTW - there may be nothing to it (and NOT wanting to start another RMS thread) and as clutches do obviously wear but if the car has suffered with a recent RMS failure, it may have contaminated the old clutch hence requiring the change. My point here is that a number of people who experience RMS problems once, do see them again at some point and you should budget for around £800 for a seal change if you get the problem. As I say - its reasonably unlikely but worth checking anyway especially if a fair bit of history has gone missing.
so if i see in the history clutch / rms,,replaced a couple of years back,,will i have the same problem again..or am i being too cautious and its the tvr ownership coming out in me,

When I purchased my 996, it was weeping slightly but not really leaving any oil on the ground. Tognola said don't even bother doing it until the clutch goes. 2 years later I had the clutch and seal replaced. No further issues.
IMHO RMS is a way overrated issue. My personal opinion is this:
Yes it is a big design fault and yes Porsche should been sorting it FOC every time. I reckon a high percentage of 996's suffer from this, probably as high as 30 - 40%. But, most of those cases are like mine, where it really isn't a big issue.
I also think the people who have ended up with severe damage as a result, are those people who aren't enthusiasts and would never even look at their cars and spot the leak. So the leak goes un-noticed. If you keep an eye on the issue, it shouldn't bite you...

I was told by an independent about 6 months ago that mine had a very slight 'sweat' .. I've had a full 48k service in an opc since then , they said my rms was fine and let me initiate a porsche warranty .. which they definitely wouldn't do if there was the slightest question about it.
May I be so bold as to suggest that Porsches leak oil ... big deal .. Just keep an eye on it .. (give's you another excuse to go out and admire it again anyway!!)
Btw , the opc suggested their check for an unserviceable rms was to wipe it clean and see if any traces of oil came into evidence again within 20 mins .. In other words a very slight sweat is normal and to be expected. At the risk of inciting the air cooled camp , I've heard their rms's sweat too .
I second Jon's motion 'that rms issues are overrated ' .. speakers to the motion!!!???

True. In fact mine went from a sweat to leaving drips on the garage floor, so I've just had it (and the clutch as the engine was out) replace.
Now other 993 owners will hate me, but I'm one of those who doesn't like 993's, or Boxters, or whatever, I just love Porsches (I long for another 944 Turbo!!).
