Has the Vauxhall Monaro been properly treated underneath to cope with the salt on the roads over the winter months? Is it worth getting it treated? What with?

I don't think they have much protection as std from OZ. I had my underside cleaned & treated before shipping - not sure wot the stuff was called - I think it ends in "...aloy" or similar??? It's supposed to contain a rust inhibitor as well as prevent penetration (maybe it was a catholic invention?? ). Maybe all the official imports had it done for warranty reasons? Prof Paul is sure to know!

Mine's got a coating of "Hammerite Waxoyl" and it simply spray's on. You can pick the stuff up at Halfords or your local Motorist Discount Centre. The starter pack which includes 5 litres cartridge can, pressure pump, spray gun, & rubber grommets is around £35 and should be enough to do the car at least once. Additional tubs can be bought in either 5l or 2.5l cannisters. I believe you can also buy it in a ready to use aerosol can.

You can also get a thick black paint on underseal from Hammerite and other companies that does the same job. I guess it's all down to preference but the Waxoyl certianly has a good reputation especially in the Classic Car clubs.

However if you've already got rusty patches they will have to be treated first as Waxoyl is only a prevention method not a cure.

I don't believe that the official HSV's were treated when they were brought in. I know when I bought my car it was one of the first things that I did after getting it up on a ramp. My local garage has the professional version of rust inhibitor and treated the whole underside for me.
