newbie question: why and how are some Griffs only 280BHP ?
Discussion
g-boy said:Hopefuly it implies just what it says.Normally,a Griff 500 in good fettle, makes in the region of 240-255ish bhp in standard form on an honest rolling road.
noticed that some of the Griffs on the sales section say "genuine 280bhp" what does that imply?
Cue endless debate............
TVR have always been a bit 'optimistic' when quoting a models power output as some owners have found out when they put their cars on a rolling road.
280BHP is about right for a fit Griff 500 but some cars vary wildly on how powerful they are. some just left the factory more powerful than other models in the same range.

urgh, i'm usually pretty decent at car research but completely forgot about the 4 litre Griff. this is looking like a promising introduction to TVR for me.
its obviously very fast but it is markedly lighter in bhp power than a tamora.
hmmm, did anybody here start in a Griff 4.0?

Back on the power front, rolling roads normally quote at the wheels, which is a lot less than the TVR figure quoted at the engine, or are the rolling road figures adjusted for transmission losses?
On the 4l front, I have a 4.3, and compared to previous cars (Lotus Elite, TVR 3000's, TVRT S3, Reliant Scimitars in various stages of tune, BMW 330), the TVR is effing fast. How fast do you want to go?? I personally wonder if some TVR Griff drivers aern't a little obsessed by power! Above and beyond the call of duty.

Usually factory quoted power is from an engine on a dyno with no ancillary bits attached and usually properlly prepared, then if the dyno isn't quite calibrated properly an unusual BHP figure can be recorded, then the production engines are given this figure even if they might not be setup the same way. If anything was done to them for better life expectancy then the tested figures would still be used, even if each production engine produced less BHP.
My take on it anyway.

It's a remarkable piece of artistic licence by TVR. I don't know how they got away with it, but they did.

Rob's (at V8D) 5.5 engine is out of this world and words cannot describe the cars new performance, can't wait for some dry roads,as braking traction at 100mph is not for the faint hearted, roll on LeMans. She is puting out 398 bhp and 438lb of torque!!!!(bit less in the car with TVR manifolds,no precats)
I'm not sure that the much criticised Blackpool figures are wrong. The BHP is only for the engine tested. If you recorded 320bhp for a good engine and allowed say 6% for variance between engines, say 6% for anciliaries and say 3% for the difficulties in testing an engine in a car (airflow, holding wheels, transmission loss estimates, etc) then a 320BHP leaflet value would equate to 272BHP on the rolling road which is about what we find given the enourmous variance between rolling roads.
the word is that the figures were "obtained" to go against the new 911 turbo which strangely had...
you guessed it
320 bhp!
problem is, all Porkers have...what the brochure says. still Tivs are cheaper, sound better and are better looking, AND people don't automatically assume your a rich tw*t that's just watched Top Gear!

the 280bhp figure for a good Griff IS an ATW figure. (at the wheels)

Sadly this is not the case. A 500 will make 220/230 atw. 270/280 is the estimated flywheel value. See many, many PH threads.
yep, sorry your right. confused by which version of tune on which engine i had!
still...'Kin quick anyway!
as for mine, I like it

Hi G boy, I have a 4.0 griff and would strongly recommend it as an introduction to tvr, its still a very quick car but not too intimidating if you aint used to rwd, they also sound awesome.
excellent, thats just what i wanted to hear!
any tips/things to look for?

Nothing wrong with that is there?Power/speed is addictive i find. As the Nitrous boys say "too much is just enough"
