Hello all
Longtime lurker-first time poster

I am very tempted to get a Mk1 GT3
I am no porsche expert though, and was wondering if I could tap your collective wisdom on some points:

1) Looking on the net I have seen 3 around the 42-45k range. What wiggle room do I have with these numbers?

2) I would be looking for the comfort pack - is there any must have/have not items I need to be aware of?

3) Finally any general buying advice is much appreciated !!

Can't comment on price but £42k seems like a steal.

Must have options Air Con and bucket seats.

Buying advice HPI, expert inspection and OPC warranty in case the engine let's go.

How much would an OPC warrenty run to for a GT3, how long do they last and can you continue to renew the warrenty indefinatly?
Can an OPC warrenty be purchased for a car thats been outside the franchise?
Has anyone heard of a GT3 engine actually going pop. I understand they're quite expensive to replace.

( thinking of a GT3 as road car)

AFAIK you can take any Porsche to an OPC get it inspected and if it passes (subject to some work possibly) have a year of warranty. Not sure on a GT3 cost but a Boxster is circa £800. Maybe add this as a condition of sale?

Get OPC to do their one hundred and whatever point test(about £200) and then provided all is OK they will sell you a warranty. As Ajit says it costs c £750 a year and is a great insurance policy against a disaster.

I see you intend to use the car mostly on the road as a daily driver. I would urge you to take a long test drive first. The sound, image and acceleration of the GT3 are intoxicating but for some the harsh ride and low ground clearance can be a bit of a pain in the ars* after a few months of ownership. Happy to say I'm not one to be placed in the category. I think the GT3 is fecking brilliant.

For any P car, including a GT3, bought without a warranty it will cost just over a grand.... Warranty £750, 111 point check, withe vat takes the total over £1k.

And you have to correct any warranty covered items they find before you get cover.

Now I am assuming that on renewal you only have to fork out the £750???

I wouldn't buy a GT3 Comfort spec, we learned the hard way at work, we bought in a 2004 GT3 comfort in black, totaly perfect car, not even a chip on it thinking that someone will want nice comfy seats, but we had it in stock for 8 months, we couldn't give it away, even when it was the cheapest in the country, so if its a GT3 or GT2 from a resale point of view, I really would by a club sport, its probably all we would buy in for stock again.

But tbh, whatever spec you get, your gonna love it.

I believe the comfort spec still comes with the Recaros, fixed back, but in leather as opposed to the fire ret. material used in the CS. You can additionally spec the optional sports seats, which are the comfy ones, but not to be confused with the Comfort spec. Club Sport spec has half roll cage, fire ext. lighter flywheel etc......

The one I looked at was comfort spec
But had the optional sports seats
Seemed the best of both worlds!

If I am being honest - the car will be 90% road use
But I want something that feels special - and makes every drive a memory

To be honest, the bucket seats make a world of difference to the car. I had a GT2 with sports seats, and managed to swap them with the Recaro Buckets and it made the car feel so much more special. Only slightly less practical too, depending on how much gear you normally stow in the back. The Recaros are comfortable enough, although very upright - not sure about long journeys though.....

dude

if you drive the car all the time then you have to go for the comfort pack with the air con. make sure you get the leather recaros as they look the part. bit of a killer on a long drive!

in summer you will be kicking yourself for sure. especially if you take it on a run to europe or the south.

the ring can get very hot in the summer as well!!!

as for GT3 engines going then very little evidence of this but speak to you local OPC. I have heard of the top ends giving problems especially if they are over revved.

the mk1 is considered to have the best internals as the same block as the GT1 race car with the Mk2 version having better brakes and a bit easier to live with. There are a few cars that have had the mk2 brakes put on them so a nice mod if you can find it.

try n get the Carbon pack as well on one too as that looks the part.

but at the prices now then it is a LOT of car for the money!

just make sure you get a warrantee for gods sake!!

re the OPC then I am not sure if you can go back to OPC if the warranty has run out?

I might be wrong here but check with OPC.

if it has run out then am sure they will take it in for the 111 check etc and then issue you with the warranty.
