I must say having avoided booze at luchtime I decided to take "Ze Beast" out for a little afternoon drive along some pleasantly deserted A and B roads.

I'm a little perturbed though, that I only managed 9.8mpg over 15 miles.

Has anyone else achieved such shockingly poor fuel economy on a gentle drive in the countryside recently? is it something to do with climate change perhaps?

That's awesome. I actually got 11mpg on track at Silverstone.

Must be the turbos....

Bloody hell UV thats outrageous. The around town figure is worse than a 92 RangeRover 3.9 (the worse petrol guzzler we've ever had in the house). Normally on a run I get about 22 or 27 if sticking below 77. With lots of cold starts and blasts in/out and around town my average is normally 16mpg. Today however the roads were empty and the route had been planned for a while. In addition because speed kills I kept in the lower gears so as not to go fast (a by product of this safety policy is the throttle is a little sensitive).

PS - Are you going to VW on the first sunday of feb? hows the exhaust noise issue fairing? trust the flames are still coming out the back?

Recently, Emma's great uncle Bernard came up to visit. Ex WW2 fighter pilot, then engineer for the RAF, then worked for BOAC/BA. A thoroughly decent chap, and a complete petrolhead. Well into his 70's ,smokes a pipe, your proper old war hero. Lovely bloke.

Once he saw Zuffenhausen's finest sat in the garage, he demanded that he be taken out for a run in it. Relief all round, I thought he might take exception to it being from the land of the Bosch, but he appreciates good engineering.

At an indicated 150-odd (on a quiet private road near me), the Porkster was guzzling at about 12mpg. I don't know what made the best noise, the car under full stomp, or great unc giggling like a schoolkid.

My fuel gauge is a 'real time' gauge, i.e. you can see it move....

The problem with town driving is a) living in London, so 5 miles can take 5hours of idle, and b) the engine cools itself using excess fuel.

It now becomes clear why I try to drive flat out all the time, it's cheaper....

I'll try and make it over to VW. The exhaust issue has pissed me off a bit. I had to put a muffler back on (still no cat), it hasn't made any noticeable difference in performance (it's a straight through design), but the car is almost silent. I think i'm going to put on some Haward and Scott headers, but after my M6 incident, i'm thinking carefully about how my power gets delivered....
