Numberplate manufacture by repairer
Discussion
I've had my car away for repair after a non-fault insurance claim. I've noticed that they've put a new rear numberplate on, but they didn't have the V5 at any point (or indeed the tax as it ran out while they had the car). Is this legal? I was under the impression that one needed proof of ownership to make a new 'plate, or is there an exemption for repairers?
There is an exemption for vehicle repairers.
We still have to be authorised by the DVLA to be a number plate supplier, but our requirements are that the number plate is supplied as part of an authorised repair on behalf of an insurance company.
If, however, you had asked for a number plate to be supplied privately you would have be requested to produce all the relevant documents.

10. Due to repair work undertaken for an insurance claim a number plate needs to be replaced. What documentation does a supplier need to record?
Personal ID must always be used along with proof of entitlement to establish a legitimate link with the vehicle. As an alternative to the normal proof of entitlement documents, suppliers can record the details of the insurer and the insurance policy number.

We agree that only a Registered Supplier can issue a new replacement plate. He has to keep records. On his record sheet he will show as authorisation to issue - Entitlement Code 9 - recording Insurance claim number and Insurers name.

I think you mean 'only a Registered Supplier may issue a new replacement plate'. www.fancyplates.com is perfectly capable of issuing a new replacement plate, it's just it's of dubious legality.
James here:
Fancy plates are totally legal in their supply as they are outside the suplier laws.
The law that then applies to me is that the plate must be to BS standards and display the supplier name. Fancy plates don't put there name on so that is the only failing. Technically yes I am using an illegal plate however in reality the letters reflectivity, BS# are all spot on. Better than getting the full 1984 treatment in which it would cost me hundreds of pounds of money to leave work to go to Halfrauds.
The law is stupid anyway, If I was a crim and needed a plate I'd just use fancy plates or nick one.

James, that is quite a popular thing at the moment, stealing plates. Trouble is, the job seem to think that only about 60% are true thefts, the others are 'fabrications' (London conjestion to blame i think)
