What do people think of high mileage MK1 GT3?

I know there has been a lot of posts on buying GT3 recently, but I've read them and they don't seem to answer this question specifically.

There's a beautiful looking black Mk1 at Dove House with the exact spec I'm looking for at just over 40k, but it's done 63K (1999 reg). How does mileage affect these engines? Can I still get an OPC warrantee when the mileage is that high? How much longer could I expect the engine to last before rebuild is needed? It would be my only car with circa 12-15K a year.

Porsche engines are pretty tough and built to last, particularly true of the GT3 motor. Key factor is that it's been properly maintained - check service history closely. For an informed opinion on engine strength etc, speak to Steve McHale at JZ Machtech he's usually only too happy to spend time talking to prospective GT3 owners and JZ have loads of experience of the model. Make sure you get the car proeprly inspected by an expert(most OPC's do not fall into this category) OPC warranty is available up to 8 yrs old I think and mileage max for warranty is under 100k, again I think. Check with the OPC on both these issues. Oh and if you are eligible for a warranty, you will need to pass the Porsche 111 point check, which together with the warranty will cost around £1000.

Aki - I was at Dove House yesterday and saw the black GT3. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, the mileage would not concern me in the slightest, those blocks really are built to last. The condition of that car is amazing...

For what it's worth, I hear from my local OPC (in Dubai) that they have never had a "major" warranty claim on the GT3 engine. This is in a country where many locals spank their cars like a ginger-haired step child in temperatures of up to 45C and high humidity.

If the car is intended to be a keeper, and you can negotiate a good discount over an average mileage car, I say go for it and enjoy.

More useful advice. I've acutally been to see the car now and like you said Jon, it is in extremely good condition. I also fell in love with the 993 turbo they have there. Got a "back to back" test drive tomorrow. Feels like Christmas Eve now...just got to wait until the morning!

Hmm, perhaps they mean they've never honoured a single major warranty claim on a GT3 engine. That would seem to be more in line with Porsche customer service.

(yes, I've just had another sniffy letter from Porsche GB refusing to replace the alloys on my RS that are of insufficient quality and robustness)
