…arrrraaaggghhhhhhh!!!!!

I’ve just spent the best part of an exasperating afternoon trying to get my laptop, mobile phone and PDA to talk to each other over bluetooth.

The mobile phone to PDA services are all sorted now.

The problem is with mobile phone to laptop and PDA to laptop at the same time. I have two bluetooth COM ports available, 5 & 6, of which the COM5 got assigned to the phone automatically and, COM6 I have manually assigned to the bluetooth serial port service and, then set the same COM port accordingly in Activesync. So now I can sync my mobile phone and PDA with the laptop. Great, except…

…my bluetooth dongle is one of those tiny USB ones that you have to disconnect each time you’ve finished using it so I loose all the COM port assignments. Activesync goes back to COM3. Then when I reconnect the dongle the mobile phone takes COM6 straight away so I have to manually change the bluetooth serial port service to COM5 and change Activesync accordingly then reset the PDA to get it to recognise the new settings.

Do it again and, yep you’ve guessed it, the mobile takes COM5 back again and I have to change the bluetooth serial port and Activesync to COM6 and reset the PDA. Repeat ad nauseam

So am I stuck with reconfiguring the bluetooth serial port and Activesync and resetting the PDA every time I want to synchronise with my laptop or is there a way I can allocate the serial ports to the devices on a permanent basis?

Oh and another less serious but no less annoying side effect is reconnecting the bluetooth dongle causes iTunes to pause playing. Click play and it carries on as normal

PC’s don’t you just love em….
