Hello Everyone,

Can anyone recomend a suitable scan tool for my 2001 Maserati 3200. My engine check light is on and off so much I thought it would save me a fortune if I knew what faults had been recorded.

Thanks,

David.

Thanks for that. Did you order the one that connects to your PC or a handheld one?

The one that connects to my laptop, you can use a vast array of different free software for it.

Can you reset the light with this model?

Yes. The only limitation with the recommended software is you can't reset airbag warning lights, bu using the interface there is no reason why you can't do exactly what a dealer would do, afterall it is the same interface.

Before purchasing, it would be worth checking first of all that your 3200GT is OBDII compatible. My 'W' reg is pre-OBDII so you cannot buy a cheap generic scan tool for it.

You are probably ok given that your car is 2001 reg, but it would be worth checking the connection nonetheless just to be on the safe side.

Hi

The earlier 3200GT models I think have >1 scan tool connection points. I'm not 100% sure about that fact as I have never attempted to hunt them out, but the one I am aware of lives just under the trim near the pedals. IIRC it looks something like a three pin socket, a little bit like a kettle lead though that's not a tremendously accurate description. I did post a picture a few months back, maybe run a search on 'scan tool' or 'OBDII' and see what it throws up.

I haven't seen a new-style socket (well not on a Maser anyway), but I would expect it would look something like a PC serial connection socket. Probably best to await an answer from Muncher, who has an OBDII scan kit and presumably has used it in anger.

cheers

It looks like this:

It will almost certainly be in the driver/passenger footwell or maybe in something like a glove box. If you e-mail Gendan they will confirm whether the tool is suitable.

The EOBD socket is placed by the O/S corner of the dash - just run your hand along the bottom of the dash, from left to right(steering column outwards) and you will come across it. It is a 16pin socket that is rectangluar in shape but designed so you can fit the socket one way up only. By the way, Airbags are a requirement of EOBD

Can i just give a little bit of advice, these tools are great at telling you why the light has come on BUT becareful coz the information can easily lead you up the garden path with dodgy codes. ALWAYS delete any codes the first time so when the light comes on you know why. Some repairers do not delete codes after they have finished thus the codes could be old. ALWAYS write the codes down before deleting them.

Finally, never assume the EOBD tools is as good as the dealer SD2/SD3, because the manufacturer only complies with necessary standard, this is never as indepth as a manufacturers equipment.
