"Spam tax" would be closer to the truth. It doesn't apply to ordinary users sending each other emails. AOL are going to charge for spamming their customers, is all. Another good reason for leaving AOL, AFAICS.

I really, really hate AOL, but I think this is an interesting and possibly good development. Only someone like AOL, who tie you in and try to dictate what you see on the web with their fancy software, could do this tho - tricky for most other ISPs, surely?

Silly idea. The technology needs to move on. It's too easy to spoof genuine email addresses currently.

Maybe I'm reading this a different way, but this looks like the same idea as Google Adwords, inasmuch as people are being given the opportunity to pay to improve their chances of a desirable outcome (in Google's case an entry on the first page, in AOL's case getting an email through their junk filter).

AOL's scheme is more concerning though. They're essentially saying that they're commited to stamping out spam, unless the spammer has paid them in which case they'll let the spam round their filters.

Yet another reason why I'll never let an AOL CD anywhere near any machine I have any control over.
