I am paying 240 a qtr for a 1 meg line from BT, if I change to Bulldog I can get an 8 meg line (with twice the upload as well) for about £120 ish, question is - will I permanently lose access to my old Pop3 email addresses? I now use our domain address for all new contacts but do not really want to have all the people I can't remember have their mails bounce?

Bulldog's website is lacking in relevant info.

Cheers
Nick

So is the current email address along the lines of aprisa@btopenworld.com?

If so, you'll lose it.

Yup, just a straight Btclick.com, I thought that would be the case but our neighbour in the next unit swears that he kept his?

Hmmmn, for the home DSL I lost my email account when I switched to Bulldog.

Could be different for business stuff I suppose.

Impossible. Once you're no longer a BT customer, they won't let you keep the email address - indeed there is no practical way they can.

The only way to do this is to buy a vanity domain and have the email delivered to whoever your "real" ISP is. That way, if you change ISP, your email addy stays the same.

I don't know if this helps but when I first went online I used AOHell. Being a creature of habit, I stayed there for 5 years before moving to my local braodband supplier (NTL). I kept my old email accounts at AOL using their 'bring your own connection' scheme meaning that I pay £8 a month to AOL.

Would something similar apply for BT? You would probably only need to keep the old addresses for 3 months or so .... just until the emails stopped flowing to that account.

I've had the same email address for years. I switched from a monthly fee for their dail-up connection to a pay as you go when I had broadband installed for work from a different supplier (guess what - I never use the dial-up but I keep the account just in case I need to dial in with a modem connection from my PDA!)

That's exactly how I keep mine.

The ISP usually sends out a "courtesy email" saying that you haven't connected via us in x days, so if you don't connect within the next few days they will termintate the account. Just dial up via PC or PDA & Bob's your mother's brother.

bit difficult to do if your address is xxx@btopenworld.com though

(and your ISP takes down your account...)

So long as you don't mind Google storing your email forever, periodically handing it over to the US authorities and scanning it for keywards so they can send you "targetted advertising", aka spam.

I no longer use BT for internet access, but I still have the POP account, costs £1.50 or there abouts per month and can either access on line or download into OE. Log in to the BT site and take a butchers at their email options.

When I switched from btopenworld to plus a few years back I could still send and receive mail thru mail2web.com on the old btopenworld address for about 6 months afterwards.

So for me it wasn't like an automatic cutoff.

Incidentally I have just switched from plus to demon and can do the same.
