SAS target Korean threat

British special forces from the SAS have been drafted in to monitor North Korea's alarming nuclear build-up, it emerged today.

The SAS soldiers have been switched from the build-up to war against Iraq to check the restarting of operations at North Korea's Yongbyong experimental nuclear complex.

The movements emerged as the crisis escalated dramatically. North Korea dismissed a US call to abandon its programme as a "pipe dream" and accused Washington of "rushing headlong into an extremely dangerous confrontation". British foreign minister Bill Rammell said the build-up was "unacceptable" and " dangerous" and called on North Korea to meet its international commitments.

The intensity of the crisis threatened to force a swift change in strategy by the US and Britain, both of which had been concentrating their forces on the threat from Iraq.

Some leading p o l i t i --c i a n s i n Britain b e l i eve North Korea, with its u n p r e --d i c t a b l e leader Kim Jong II, poses a g r e a t e r threat to w o r l d security t h a n Saddam H u s --s e i n ' s regime.

The country was branded one part of a global "axis of evil" - along with Iraq and Iran - by President George Bush.

The crisis blew up after the International Atomic Energy Authority established that the Korean authorities has moved 1,100 fuel rods to Yongbyong, 50 miles north of Pyongyang. The complex, closed under an agreement with the United Nations and the US in 1994, can produce weapons-grade plutonium.

The fear is that communist North Korea will export nuclear capability to rogue states and terrorist groups. North Korea has strong ties with Pakistan, which already has a nuclear bomb, and where dissident groups from within the military are thought to be rearming and reforming guerrilla units for the Talnuclear-Possible duties for the SAS include monitoring export channels. The Ministry of Defence never comments on any operations by special forces.

Today the official Korean Central News Agency said remarks by US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other officials showed Washington was keen to "topple" North Korea rather than hold discussions.

The KCNA said: "The United States is rushing headlong into extremely dangerous confrontation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, saying that it would neither have dialogue with the DPRK nor rule out a war against it.

"The US much-publicised assertion that North Korea should scrap its programme first is nothing but a pipe dream as it calls for disarming the DPRK under the absurd pretext of its 'nuclear program' and then launching a surprise attack on it to overthrow its political system."

Mr Rammell said North Korea's conduct was "very worrying, dangerous and unacceptable". But he believed that united diplomatic pressure would come to bear on the country which, he claimed, was making a "clumsy attempt" to gain international clout rather than posing a real threat.

• Tony Blair's arrival in Egypt for a family holiday was marred by a row over the closure of an airport to let his party pass. Angry tourists claimed the airport at Sharm-el-Sheikh was shut for an hour, delaying holiday flights. Meanwhile, Mr and Mrs Blair, their four children and entourage were given an armed escort away from the airport.

I bet SH is wearing a broad smile today. The N Koreans have shifted the focus just in time. The threat from the NKs is substantially greater than that from Iraq. It will escalate a lot faster too. I hope the countries in the NK region take the leadership role in shutting that damn reactor down. If they need advice on how to do it they should ask the Israelis who did a super job on Iraq's Osiraq reactor in 1981.

Watch this one - it will ramp up very quickly.

If there is a creator out there, he/she though that it would be a bit of a laugh to give this human species a bit of a brain, but keep the survival of the fittest mentality that rules the rest of nature.

Unfortunately, went a bit wrong, and we have become the first species in history capable of wiping ourselves out - and more and more of us are gaining the abiilty todo just that and end our race.

N Korea is one hell of a loose cannon, my old company did some work there and apparently Communist Russia was a walk in the park compared to this lot, poverty is extremely bad and Kim Jong Il hates the south with a passion.

Here we go again, another Country that Bush can Flex his muscles at.

Not keen to enter discussions, but keen to launch a surprise attack and topple North Korea.

And spark WW3 in the process.

Looking at the Political state of the world just now, what with the Isreal-Palestine stuff, SH, NK, and Al Quaida. Entering into any sort of Weapons based conflict would be a huge mistake.

If bush wants all these other countries to Disarm, he should disarm the US. Keeping them as a Deterrant is no longer a viable argument in a world were Leaders and Terrorists just don't give a shit.

Total Global Nuclear Disarmament should be THE TOP Priority for the UN Security Council. Starting with the 5 members, then spreading throughout NATO and the Former members of the Warsaw Pact, then the rest of these Commie Gits might (and that is a big might) follow suit. Sending in SF will do no good at all. But we know they are already in there.

Sorry tvradict, but that's a rather naive take on the situation you have there.
NK is within scud missile range (they have quite a few of them) of the 2 most economically imortant nations in Asia, South Korea & Japan.
The last time the nuclear issue heated up, the NK's fired a scud into the sea of Japan to remind the world of what they were capable of. Hey presto loads of rice/grain/cash/nuclear reactor aid from the West (& I include Japan & SK) for Kim Jong Il to do with as he saw fit, i.e. increase the strenght of the army.
NK should not be classed along with the few remaining communist nations. It does not operate as a marxist state, but one that runs under a cult of personality wherein Kim Jong Il's every mad wish is acted upon. This makes it extremely dangerous to try & reason with them.
Don't forget that Seoul is within artillery range of NK, & that NK has one of the largest standing armies in the world. One day they might just roll south. Then the world economy will be well & trully f@rked.

However scale up a scud a bit and ICBM & the moon are possibilities. Accurate guidance is probably the tricky bit.

Funny how all those antis screaming "no war" in Iraq have just been shitted to death by the N.Koreans flexing their muscles.
This kind of parade by the lunatic N.Koreans leader, (have you seen him?, he looks like a cross between Larry Howard and Harpo Marx) is just the kind of thing that will happen one day with Iraq.
But the people who have no vision dont see it coming, or they just dont want to.
Theyre just too engrossed in their own lives to understand what the big picture is all about.
Well you antis, (you know who ya are) you just got a wake up call.
Lesson? Deal with problem states before they deal with you.

Tvradict: Hell, you have a point of view so stick around and add to the discussion. No one learns anything from discussion board politics talk unless
someone's got the b@lls to put their head over the parapet and put across their point of view. You did that on a global nuclear disarmament ticket. So let's debate that.

The best time to work a global nuclear disarmament strategy is during a period of stability. Korea are not going to be persuaded to take the lead in this initiative at a time when KJI, the N Korean leader, perceives an opportunity to ingratiate himself with the Korean people by some anti-Western oppressor propaganda.

So I agree with you that the longer term strategy for Global disarmament is appropriate (look how far we've come on this since the Cuban crisis), but I think a short term tactical solution is to neutralize the threat of N Korean nuclear proliferation leading to regional destabilisation.

I suspect there will be a rapid regional response to avoid the US having an opportunity to intervene. Bush, by intimating that he might be prepared to intervene is hopefully going to precipitate this.

My Point exactly. Ive done alot of courses regarding Leadership (mostly of men) and the key factor is always, LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

If he wants to remove the threat of terrorism he needs to remove the percieved threat the US is imposing on the Middle/Far east. Otherwise we get a stalemate and, possibly, a further chapter in the Cold War Part 2. Just without the ships and Cuba. A couple of Red buttons and a few silos.

Nuclear Disarmamant will ONLY work if it is backed by the UN and NATO. Which means that all country's involved in said organisation need to remove Nuclear weapons and Nuclear Capable Ships/Aircraft/Land going Vehicles. I do, however, understand that this isn't possible. The Eurofighter, Panavia Tornado's, Trident Submarines etc are all Nuclear Capable. But removing the Weapons will be a start.

However, I also understand that during todays political unrest, this will not happen. I have just seen a piece on the News about NK. It seems that ordering a UN Weapons Inspection team out of the country says they mean business and don't give a fcuk what the West think. While the East have the weapons, the West won't disarm. While the West won't disarm, neither will the East. And the US won' period.
It's a catch 22 with that moron George W tacked on the side.

I hope the world isn't wiped out by an East-West conflict. However, as each day goes on it gets closer and closer.

Here is an excerpt from a recent news story...

"North Korea claims that it is restarting the reactor to generate badly needed electricity after the United States and its allies cut off oil shipments.

The oil supplies were cut off in response to recent revelations that the North Koreans had been covertly pressing ahead with efforts to develop nuclear weapons in violation of the 1994 agreement."

Full story available here:
www.msnbc.com/news/850567.asp?0dm=C13MN

The only difference between NOW and a month or so ago is that the NK's are NOT trying to be sneaky about it.

I believe that this is just an attempt to have the energy shipments reinstituted.

Worrying? ABSOLUTELY. A reason for the west to disarm? ABSOLUTELY NOT. If anything, the west should forge ahead with ABM technology. After that technology is matured, share it with strategic governments in all parts of the world and then make the damned things (ballistic nukes) redundant...

All IMHO

The Eurofighter, Panavia Tornado's...are nuclear capable....

WRONG, COMPLETLY INCORRECT!

While the East have the weapons, the West won't disarm.

YOUR BLOODY RIGHT WE WON'T!

I hope the world isn't wiped out by an East-West conflict.

IT WILL NOT BE A "EAST/WEST" CONFLICT IN THE "OLD" SENSE BUT MORE OF A NORTWESTERLY/SOUTHEASTERLY AFFAIR.

Have a nice day y'all.

I agree that these the N.Korean situation is a worrying one ... certainly gives me the shits anyway.

We in the West have the weapons and everybody else in the wolrd want them too. The problem is that we're percieved as hypocites asking them to destroy WMD capability whilst mainaining a healthy arsenal ourselves. It may sound a bit unrealitic but I think we in the West too should do away or at least scale down our nuclear cpabilty. Only them can we seriously ask nations like Pakistan, India, N.Korea to destroy theirs.

I dont think the Threat is immediate as it takes quite a time to get the station up and running and capable of producing anything. Heard 5 mnths was the the estimated time.
Aslong as they use the station just to produce electricity there shouldnt be a problem but would agree there is that question of threat and prehaps have it policed somehow by the UN.
Dont know much about NK except they are Commies.
Also what does NK produce as we all know the Yankees are so heavily involved is apart from they like Kicking arse is of the OIL.
