Anyone have any idea what year they changed the 4.2 cranks to sronger metal, or from which engine number.

I was under the impression that it was continuous development.

The early ones had a habbit of snapping in two!

apparently it was from about 97- 98 they fixed the probelm with the early cast cranks that said it a cars got more than 40K on the clock chances are it would gone bang by now and will therefore be OK ( at least thats what I'm tellin gmyself with my 97 4.2) Oh and any 4.5 will be OK as its got bigger journals and never suffered from this malaise
Some 4.5's are even steel, machined from solid cranks, the ones with 'GT' in the engine number I believe

I've heard (from TVR Power) that the older 4.2 cranks with smaller journals are no longer available, so if you need a new crank in an early block, you'll need to line bore it.
