Whether by accident or design, I was pleased to see a sensible safety message from Croydon County Council:

No "Speed Kills" nor "Twenty is Plenty" but thankfully the correct message that appropriate speed is required.

Being an optimist, I sincerely hope that particular wording was by design.

Driving through a village early hours this morning and a sign on the left started flashing at me, then posted my speed (29mph) and then SMILED......... Made me smile... what a great idea. Although i must admit it made me look and take my eyes of the road for a split second. Beats being flashed at though.

Problem with those is that they can become a competiton to see who can get the highest reading...

Excellent. There do seem to be plenty of the other sort of "safety" messages on signs in that neck of the woods, so hopefully the trend is starting to reverse.

So program them not to display speeds in excess of the limit - hardly rocket science.

I thought the idea was for them to show your speed when you exceed the limit so that you will be encouraged to slow down. This should hopefully remove the desire for local councillors and the Camera Partnership from putting a speed camera up. I have been told that these signs are in fact recording the speeds and if it is found that the majority of drivers are exceeding the limit it is good grounds for mobile enforcement.
I suppose the reason for them flashing at all speeds is so that you know there working. They are also quite handy for checking your speedo against them.

And it's THESE people that are the ones that are the problem on the roads, not the everyday slightly over the limit drivers minding the road and driving considerately, but the plebs who purposely go as fast as they can with a single aim of being faster than anyone else, not getting from a to b safely and swiftly, which is all you should ever be doing. Safety first, speed second!

Not really. We had a Smiley Sid around here that, when set for 30, wouldn't display your speed if you went past it at more than 40.

Allegedly.

I quite like the stuff in Derby at the moment, with the hippy on the back of the buses and the 'Chill out driver dude' message

Seconded. We should reward sound thinking, and not bicker over little things.

Just as long as they've been calibrated properly - there's enough out there that seem to think that when my speedo says 25 (which, according to gps, is 23-24 in reality) I'm actually doing 30+ and in need of a warning... And then there was the mobile unit in the M4 roadworks last year which got upset if you went past at 40 despite it being a 50 limit at that point.

No question about it, I'd rather see a SID than a scamera, but they *have* to be properly set-up and maintained if they're not to end up being treated with scorn and ignored by drivers pissed off with them activating when they shouldn't be.
