TVR Insurance - Europe Charges (e.g. Le Mans!)

I've just been told that Priv, Direct Line and Churchill (as they are all RBS group) charge extra for using your car abroad (over three days). So for driving to Le Mans - four days would cost £25.20. I've never heard of that before as I thought we were all covered across Europe?!? Anyway as I go away for quite a few long weekends I've had to bin them!

Didn't you check before you bought the policy if you go away often?

Are you confusing the EU Compulsory Cover (green card) which is free (but is only equivalent to third-party), with the fully comp cover that you have to pay extra for. Do any of the big insurers give this for free - if so tell us! I've got Tesco Insurance (another RBS company) and it does the same (it's on the website and in the policy)

Yes, I checked before buying so I'm not going with them. I've been with Mannings, Direct Line in the past, Endsleigh, Priv, Jardine Faber, etc, etc and currently with Elephant and I tell them when I go away and they don't levy any additional charges.

I was thinking about my insurance renewal and changing ... so I tried for a couple of quotes.

Tesco ... "car insurance quote £395.85"
Elephant ..."Your Price is £552.30"

I think I'll stick with Tesco

I'm with direct line - had both cars to France several times ( tiv to lemans and merc on booze cruises 3 or 4 times) no extra charge so far ???

Direct Line give you up to 72 hours (I think) free fully comp in Europe, but you have to inform them. Over that it cost me £25 last year for Le Mans.

Hardly a lot of money is it?

Less than half a tank of fuel.

Yes, all three RBS group give you three days free, but when comparing the cost of insurance £25 per trip makes them less competitive to a company that don't charge as I would expect to run up at least five lots of £25!

indeed ... but if you look at the quotes I got ... that's multiple 3 day trips for free and also 6 trips of over 3 days at £25 before the Tesco quote even gets to the same cost of the Elephant!

I'd be interested to hear if ginganinga gets a similar difference in quotes ...
