Sports exhaust question
Discussion
When people refer to a sports exhaust (or when you're buying one), is it just the back boxes (mufflers) that are commonly replaced or the whole thing running the length of the car?
What makes the difference to sound - the mufflers or the whole.
If its a bit of both, do the mufflers make the biggest difference and is it a case of the whole would be nice but the mufflers are the most important bit?
Considering sports exhaust for the GT3 (am aware of noise and trackday issues)
cheers
Ajit.

When people talk about a Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) they are referring to the two backboxes. In the case of the PSE is a vacuum actuated baffle that open and closes at a press of a button. Replacing the manifold and the catalysts can affect the sound and also the power output....for the good and for the worse. Generally a good system from one vendor which replaces all of the exhaust components will produce worthwhile gains without the any of the disadvantages.

Dont believe Porsche do a "Porsche Sports Exhaust" for the GT3, in the way they do for the Carrera's, so it's be an aftermarket one I would think (stand to be corrected here....)
As mentioned above, most people stick to the silencers...cat bypass pipes are available and pretty straightforward to fit I think...not 5mins, but not a days job either. Of course, when you venture down the route of headers, cat bypass pipes and free-er flowing silencers, you're then into the realms of re-mapping to maximise performance and safe-guard the engine from too lean a mix.
The official PSE does only add noise (although because of that it feels faster!!), is no free-er flowing therefore doesnt require any remapping.

Am thinking about fitting a sports exhaust to my 996 (and using an independent) and like the idea of the switchable one (if wife gets irritated, kids sleeping) but irked a bit by the price.
So question is really: on a motorway if the exhaust is on all the time is it a bit irritating / intrusive after a while? Or is it barely noticable over the tyre noise?
Thanks

Well, I bought the whole kit'n'caboodle 7-8 months ago, fitted the zorsts myself, along with the vacuum piping/switching that actuates the bypass valves...ran out of time that particular day...never got around to finishing off the job and dismantling the car to run wires to fusebox/dash.
It is on my "list of things to do"....but that's maybe a good measure of how liveable it is on a day to day basis.
Personally, no I dont find it obtrusive at all, and am really only fitting the switch to keep neighbours happy on 4am starts. It sounds superb, still cannot believe a manufacturer markets something that sounds that "interesting"
On motorways, on light/cruising throttle, I cant tell the difference really...it doesnt irk me. Like you though, with my newborn in car, it may well make sense to have the option. Even my Mrs doesnt moan about it (she HATED my Subaru TypeR....and that wasnt as loud outside as the PSE...must be better cabin insulation!)
Would I pay a few hundred quid for an indy to fit wiring...hmm, perhaps £150-200, but no more, not now I've lived with it.
