997 Gearbox Problem

My car was in the OPC to have a couple of recall fixes applied.
Prior to it being delivered back, I received a call informing me that they had discovered a gearbox problem (nothing to do with the recalls) and required "the replacement of the synchromesh for first and second gears".
Anyone else had this, or a similar, problem.
More importantly, what could have caused this??

Worn synchros... quite rare in new cars unless the factory spec'd things wrong for manufacture (chocolate gears etc.) or the gearbox oil isn't doing its thing for whatever reason.
If no-one else is suffering it may have just been a batch of cars they're doing... is yours a very early 997?

It's just under 1 year old so not particularly early.
Having had numerous cars over the past 20 years and never had any gearbox issues, I was just curious as to what had gone wrong with this one.

Also, am worried that the OPC are going to replace the damanged parts rather than replace the gearbox.
I do, however, have a healthy degree of doubt that the average 19 year old "factory trained technician" is capable of rebuilding a gearbox.

They will get a proper tech to rebuild the box, don't worry. However, do ask what they're doing and why they're doing it. Then tell us all here for reference
Excuse my complete lack of technical knowledge, but is there any further damage that could be caused to the gearbox while I wait for the problem to be fixed?

My understanding is that OPC's actually do not repair gearboxes (open up) but exchange them alltogether as Porsche in Stuttgart reserves the right to recondition, repair or rebuild the gearboxes so even for manor faults such as an oilleak the entire gearbox is exchanged and sent back to Germany. That was what I was told when my car developed an oilleak in the TipS box and it had to be exchanged.

Add this to the fact that they have fixed NONE of the other five items I asked them to but 2 others I didn't even know were problems and you get the picture.
They have had the car for (another) week and done sweet all.

Never said any of the cars fell apart.
I've had a number of Porsches and, like other cars, they've had their problems.
No idea whether I'm unlucky or not, just telling it like it is, ie I've had three RMS failures.
