Im off to NZ for 3 weeks at christmas and a week in sydney for new year I now have the age old dilema of photo storage. At the moment i only have 2 gig of CF cards. I have been taking my work laptop with me to events to download to, but obviously work wont let me take it to new zealand with me. Whats the best budget solution for storing pics while im out there. Do i buy a few more CF cards or a portable storge device. I want to spend as little as possible on this because there is alot of other stuff i need to buy over the year to take with me.

Thanks WVM

Keep thinking the same myself.

A few hundred notes for 20, 30 or 40 gigs of high-techie stuff, or about £40 now for 1GB of CF card.

CF cards aren't going to last for ever, and a handful of them mitigates the risk if one fails. 170 to 180 shots per 1Gb CF card, therefore the three I've got allow over 500 shots. I'm probably going to go for a couple more cards for my next trip, or maybe just one 4Gb card - then I'll be good for 1200 shots.......

Or if you're not fussed about having a fancy screen, you can get something like the Jobo Giga One 40GB for less than £100.

In 4 weeks touring I used 11.5Gb; I borrowed a friend's 20Gb Phototainer for the task as it was a one-off need.

Only one mystery: when I got back to the UK, all the images from 28 December were missing... I don't know if this was the Phototainer or not. Luckily, as I didn't quite trust it for some reason, I asked my host to back up the images on his HD as well - and he was able to post me a CD with the missing ones

Another option is to get them backed up onto CD as you go - in all tourist areas (which is basically the whole of NZ) there are places offering this service.

All you need now is some velcro to stick it to the back of your camera and wire the bugger up directly - no CF cards needed at all. Think of it as a very big microdrive that's too big to fit in the slot

I have one of these
www.eastgear.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=17_66&products_id=443
It's a CompactDrive PD70X. I bought mine without a hard drive as I had a 60gb laptop drive spare, best thing about it is that it can download a full 2gb cf card in about 5 minutes, it runs on 4 aa batteries which give it the capacity to download about 70gb on one charge. I bought mine form the above company in Singapore and had it withinn 3 days.

I use the predecessor to this. I suspect all the card readers with built-in hard drive are very similar beasts. Batteries easily last long enough for at least a week's holiday without having to take the charger along too.

I remember you said you were looking at that last year, nice to hear it does what it claims.

I've got the epson 2000 but I got it when flash was about 100 quid/gig, as I've picked up more cheaper memory, I've found myself taking the epson less on short trips and only on medium trips where viewing might be required, laptop goes on longer trips.

I bought one of these. it is not the best but it is seriously budget (£65 for 40GB), but works fine, just plug battery pack in, plug in usb connector and press the copy button.

Easy to upgrade to larger HD if needs be later.

Just fell upon this article re Jobo kit soon to be released.

Also noted that it refers to upgrading the earlier version with some of the new feature where possible through software.

I managed to find a Kodak in deepest darkest Albania earlier this week who did just this. I was there for a day and a half and shot nearly 1000 images - cue me returning home with 3 full CF cards and 6 CDs!

My Jobo Giga One's turned up today - can't wait to get it filled up next month with a trip to the Middle East and the Maldives....

Thanks to Ed - for pointing out what great value they are! Neat little jobbie too!
