42" plasma / lcd
Discussion
Right, after moving into the London flat, it's about time I got a tele. 42" is about the right size, so I've been looking at plasma and LCD's. Simple eh? Er, no it turns out!
My wish list is :-
* Must be 42" (ish). No smaller than 37" and no bigger than 45"
* Must be Plasma or LCD (no projectors or indirect LCD's)
* Must do HDTV so 1024*768 minimum resolution
* Must be able to take PC input and do 1:1 pixel mapping, preferably with digital input.
* Digital tuner
* Not look like a dogs dinner (like the Philips things)
I've also got concerns about plasmas and their image retention issues. I thought I'd found a great set (Pioneer 436 SXE) as the picture quality was great in the shop. But it seems to have image retention issue (people say), and you cannot get the PC input to do the native screen res.

Do some research on the new samsung panel. Its the latest one out and is awesome. By far the bset on the market at the mo in 40" guise. (info from my mate who borks for Bang and Olafsen!)
Its being used in the New Sony Bravia range which come in 3 levels of prossessor speed with the top one producing near HD quality from a normal tv feed! Its rather exspensive though. The next one down is also pretty great.
Samsungs new models will use the same panels obviuosly.
Not sure if you know, but there are only 2 or 3 companies that make all the panels for the whole market, so this new panel will no doubt make its way into 20+ different tv's and they will all vary due to the quality and size of the electronics bits that power them.
There is just starting a massive boom in big LCD's as the introduction of this new panel has produced screens that at (at last) better than the equivelent plasma screens. You need to look at the contrast ratios. Higher the better.
A few years ago you would be buyinng screens of 400:1 but now you can get an lcd thats 4000:1 !! and up>
It may pay to wait another 6 months till this new wave of LCD's has become the norm.

PS. You may be able to tell that I am looking for one too!

Have a look at the Panasonic Viera. They have just updated the spec
www.panasonic.co.uk/plasma-tv/th42px60cab/index.htm
or the older one which is the one I have and you might be able to get some deals on it:
www.panasonic.co.uk/plasma-tv/th50pv500cab/index.htm
Not sure what the difference is though!

Its a rolling discount actually, Bedders. Judicious use of the words "peasants" "commies" "scum" "filth" and the word "socialist" in the most derogatory phrase you can think of will see you right, I've found. Oh, and the killer is if you've spent more on a 993 Turbo than he has. Sadly, you could probably count on one hand the number of persons this applies to.
I'm in that market - this weeks What Hi Fi seems to point to:
Pioneer PDP-436XDE (43" plasma) (RRP 2.8k)
Sony - KDL-V40A12U (40" LCD) (RRP £2.4k)
Both 5 stars - seen them both on the net at about 20% off this price... Good Sir DeR will be hearing from me (as long as he stocks them!)

Phil - Only comment i would make is that Blu-ray or HD-DVD will be able to provide a full monty 1080p HD signal. Screens that can do 1920x1080 native arrive on the market in a few months time...........not a problem with SKY HD as that is only 720p, but the added screen res will be a major bonus for the PS3 or a media center PC.
