Hi
I need to get a Tracker fitted to my car. I phoned
around every insurance broker in Sprint and a few others beside, and none will insure the car (at replacement value) for fire and theft without a tracker being fitted.
I am not a fan of these things, but needs must, so a few questions
:-
- Which 24hr monitoring tracker do people recommend - has to be Thatcham Q approved apparently
- How much will it cost
- Can anyone recommend an installer around Essex/Suffolk/Norfolk area? Don't fancy letting someone who has not worked on a TVR before, loose with my P and J's wiring harness!!
Thanks
Mark

Mark - not sure whether this is in relation to a Tuscan specific query, but in my experience, insurers generally require a tracker for cars > £30k in value. I have a Tracker Monitor fitted by Tracker UK themselves, which comes with an annual subscription fee and a charge if the tracker needs reconnection (such as when the engine needs rebuilding
). Tracker themselves do the fitting, with no wires etc, but also do not inform you to the precise location to maintain security. Charges on the website.
I found them an excellent service and very professional - but some will take the view that why fit a tracker if you get back a car which has been stolen and is a wreck?

Try Carl Baker at Car & Bike - he's worked on TVRs for a number of years both directly with owners and also for a number of main dealers. He has a tracker system which doesn't involve an annual subscription, one of the guys on the Tam, T350 and Sag forum had one fitted. Details on www.tvruk.tv and he'll travel to you if that's what you prefer.

Thinking about a tracker myself, last months SPRINT (Feb page 8) has an article about APPELLO from Custodia (£450 to TVRCC members...however their WEB site states cheaper).Doesn't need wiring in, battery operated and works using GSM(like mobile phone...cells presumably..rather than GPS) So is meant to work in steel containers when your car is about to exported!!.Don't know if insurance companies would accept it.try www.custodia-systems.co.uk
has anyone experience of TRACKER vs APPELLO??

Hi
Thought I would give a bit of an update.
Sorting a tracker on a car is an absolute nightmare. What one company recognises another does not.
Had a long conversation with Carl Baker (details above) liked the sound of the Meta GPA800. Not acceptable to my insurer. Thanks Ms Lumley!
I then asked my insurer for a list of acceptable trackers. Well actually asked 4 times so far. Due to FSA regulations they are not allowed to fax or e-mail a list of "acceptable tracking devices".
When some of the ones they mention on the telephone cost over £1k and cost over £20 per month, I think it would be good practice to have an upto date list to ensure I don't get the wrong spec.
I hate to say it but I think this whole thing is a bit of a scam...now looking to cancel Ms Lumley to find someone who doesn't want a tracker...
Any ideas welcome...don't really want to go for the insure under £50k route...

Mark,
I've got ours insured with Bell Direct, who didn't require a tracker even though I quoted replacement cost not purchase price. No restrictions to mileage, includes business use for both Helen and I, etc. Only down side that I've found so far is that there's no track day cover on the policy, but I don't intend to do a track day this year.
If trackers were so good you would assume that insurance companies would give you a discount, even when they don't require it, but they don't.
Also personal experience of tracking devices on 3 different cars is very poor, both with the device and with the admin of the companies involved. When the premium ran out on the P1 no-one even bothered to contact us to tell us or ask for a renewal fee
Fortunately Adrian Flux don't require trackers either - they also quoted for the Tuscan but couldn't match Bell's price.

I had a Tracker fitted to a Suzuki HayaBusa Motorcycle I use to own,
Got nothing of the insurance for having it fitted but they insteaded on having it ,
Funny thing when I sold her the new owner Didn't want to ride her back home as it was quite cold ETC so borrowed a mate's van,
Within 5 minute's of them driving up the road Tracker where phoning me asking about my vehicle, was I with it ETC.
After 10/15 Minute's they where happy I had sold the motorcylce on.
Tracker phoned me back later to say they still tracked it to it's new owner's house telling me which way they went and how many time's they stopped as well.
