A B C

Router 192.168.1.1

A) Main PC/ 192.168.1.17
B) Wifes PC/ 192.168.1.18
C) Server PC/ 192.168.1.19

If I use A/B and type http://192.168.1.19 it connects to C.

now if try to connect to myself via 88.xx.xx.xx all I get is the router!

Questions are

1) How do I connect to myself.
2) How do I make computer C connect to the outside world?

Main reason for this is to load documents locally and allow someone to dial remotely to grab information. One of the files is 10Mb so it will be quicker for me to load locally.

Win XP.

Assuming the machine in question can already get out on the net....

Port forwarding on your router is your friend... Just make sure the machine is fully secured, patched and AV'd before you do. I take it you are talking about allowing external users to grab files via ftp?

If you're allowing them ftp access then forward port 21 to 192.168.1.19. This assumes ftp is running on your server etc. and your server IS SECURE

It'll be in the manual for the router how to do it. Can't give specific advice without knowing the exact router model.

If you're going to use remote desktop, change the port it uses from the standard one to something non-standard - that way it won't show up in normal quick port scans and you won't get hammered as much. Instructions here: http://ezinearticles.com/?Remote-Desk
