Connecting to New Laptop without serial rs232 using USB

Hi All ,

Just got one of these ..

serial connecter to USB from ebay 3.99 plus 3.99 post (buy it now price) delivered next day!!

connected it to my new dell laptop changed com port to com1 and it plugs and plays with my TVR!

Saves buying an old laptop jus for the job!!

Glad you posted this, got myself a new laptop but haven't had the opportunity to connect it to the Cerb yet. Got the software loaded and everything's ready for a tune up next week, but would have looked a bit daft as the lappy's got no 232 port, just usb's.

Purchased the adaptor now, so everything should go swimmingly.

Am already using one with my Cerb. It does have some downsides however. Its not a true RS232 port because its not memory mapped like a normal com port.

So dos based programs, or really any operating system that can't get along with its drivers, or installs replacement serial port drivers can't use it.

assume this doesnt affect our task of connecting TVR to laptop .. mine seems fine?

I was trying to find a devise to test it on and concluded I dont have any other serial devices other than TVR

Was worried cos I read a few threads of nightmares connecting to TVR ...

Nope mine seems to work fine with the TVR. However stuff like carsoft is a different matter. Although only a problem with the beamer

I have a large pile of USB to RS232 adaptors, and have found them very inconsistant. Some work with some programs, but not others.

These days I always use a PCMCIA to RS232 card, and this is perfect. Works in all computers and with all programs I have tried. You can find them very cheaply on eBay too, although I bought one of the first and paid over £100 for it many years ago (the price of being first I guess ).

However none of these are any use with "Ye Olde DOS Programmes" that I also use. An antique laptop is the only answer then

I originally connected to my Cerb with a USB -> Serial lead. Nothing but probs.. Used to crash the laptop everytime i connected anything to it. Including the Cerb ECU.

Bought myself an old Toshiba with serial port in the end.

Yes, got your email, but unfortunately ran out of time to complete my farting on that night. Back at work now, so will have to wait till Saturday/Sunday to see if it works ok.

Hmm, unfortunately PCMCIA uses an intermediary driver just like the USB adapters so no memory mapping of the ports either.

Perhaps we could do a bit of naming and shaming of USB adapters that work. Mine seems to work with the software and is a cheapy novatech one.

just bought one of those usb rs232 thingy me bobs off ebay seemed to work fine for a few weeks but now laptop has crashed - will it have taken all my programmes with it? or will a clever computer blokey be able to retrieve them all?

What do you do if the Cerb ECU crashes?

OH WELL .. I DONT KNOW .. WORKED (WORKS) FOR ME ...
SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD ALL BE A WORLD OF PAIN ... I HAD MY OLD DESKTOP SET UP IN GARAGE BUT ALL A
BIT HEATH ROBINSON!

I ASSUME EMERALD ECU'S ARE MORE UP TO DATE FROM A CONNECTION PIINT OF VIEW??
