924 Turbo's Any Good?

Just sold my Lotus Elan SE, and now thinking about a possible new toy which I'm looking to spend upto a max of £3k or just over, my initial thoughts were a mk1 Golf GTi Campaign but I've noticed these are around (be it in limited numbers) around this sort of money.
Now I know about the 924 van engine jokes, poor mans Porsche etc but the Turbo looks on paper a pretty quick car & capable
They were a bit before my time, so a. are they any good and b. are they reliable c. what they like to run (will be a fun car covering around 3k miles a year)
I appreciated cars of this age are a bit of a lottery, but would only buy a well historied example (my Elan had every bill from new!)

Been a while but I had a 924 Carrera GT which is a hybrid 924T. So excuse my vague comments.!
Go for the series 2, I think it had a smaller turbo so spooled up quicker.
Check Gear change, 1st gear synchro is very fragile.
The car is a bit like driving an elastic band with lots of whoooooshing, but a very capable and fun car for the money. Running costs are sensible.

I had one (from Henry F) for a couple of years ago. It was without a doubt the best 3 grand I ever spent. An absolute top giggle.
The gearbox point above is valid. Mine expired on a trackday, but £150 for a replacememt had me back in business.
I believe the chap who bought from me a year or so ago, my be selling. PM me if you want me to dig out his number.

the 924 t is a fun little car, however, ther are some issues. The 1st gear is pants, and it is very unlikely you will get one now. From Porsche, they are a four figure price!!! However, the 944 Audi box is easy to fit, and is very reliable. Secondly the elecrtrics are a bit flaky. Seems to stem from the earthing points located around the car. They corrode and the fun begins. On the plus side, parts are dirt cheap, but make sure the motor is in good order. I bought one as a trackday fun car, owing to my GT3 being on the noisy side, and have got a little carried away with the restoration...http://public.fotki.com/BassGT/931/
In short, good car, but 80's technology. however, it is not hard to tease a few more ponies from the engine, and to banish the dreaded lag.If you can, ditch the CIS(mechanical fuel Injection) and your in business.
