I went under a bridge on the M6 on the way home for Christmas at a speed which may have been in excess of the speed limit, but which was definitely less than a ton!! Only thing was I didn't notice the police Volvo sitting on the bridge.

Can I get a NIP from one of these if it didn't stop me and wasn't a van with a mobile camera?? If so what am I looking at?

Report in the papers down here (S Wales) from local police on the camera issue. The gist was what trigger speed they had set, if any and what lane they were looking at. eg set trigger at 85 and targetting middle lane.
I would also assume that the operator could do what he want's.
Not much help but a view on what might be going on.

Now that people are back, any thoughts? Can only white vans get you from bridges, or patrol cars as well?

Has now been 14 days so am remaining hopeful.

If you get an NIP, try to find the name and previous address of a local petty criminal to blame it on... Usually they're wanted for buglarly, so the speeding is taken into consideration, and they're let off scott free

Seriously though, I think patrol cars only have forward facing camera's... Unless he had a laser/handheld thing set up outside I reckon you're probably ok.

I was just going to pose as a minor celeb to get off with it, or as a footballer.

There was definitely no one outside the car and I didn't see them pointing anything at me (although I was past fairly quickly), so still hopeful. Not really bothered either way though, just annoying if I did get caught, but my own fault.

They could have a camera but I don't think it's likely. Patrol cars normal have video cameras that are linked in to speedo etc so basically do a VASCAR (IE follow you). Or they have hand-held speed guns and a mate further down the road who stops you. This is not to say they couldn't have a camera but.... Also, if the 14 days have already passed then forget it. It is now to late for you to be issued with a NIP. I believe you have to receive it within 14 days (although it could be sent within 14 days).

Any of the BiB want to confirm/refute any of this?

Has to be sent within 14 days I think, so given the postal service round here I will feel a bit safer next week.

Has to be sent within 14 days not including the day of the offence (not recieved).

Can be sent by first class post. This is regarded as proper service.

You could recieve it 4 months later and it still be valid if you have been difficult to trace as long a service was within the 14 specified days.

If the summons has not been issued within 6 months from the date of the offence, then it is out of time.

If it has been issued within that time, then it can be served even 6 years later and still be valid.

Madcop, I feel sorry for you, having to repeat the same information time and time again.

Note to all PHers, read through old related threads before asking common questions again!

I think this one should go as a FAQ, as it appears to satisfy the entrance requirement!

Sorry, wasn't expecting anyone to repeat NIP notice period stuff, as I have read all of that before. Simply asking about the patrol car's likelihood of having nabbed me.
