...yes, I know I've been away for a long time but just thought I'd let anyone who still remembers the somewhat incongruous sight of a diesel Volvo estate at a PH gathering know that the "TVR Support Vehicle" (which was the only way that I could justify turning up at the PH meets in a Volvo) is no more.
Yes, she was driven away a few days ago with over 140,000 miles on the clock - running just as gutlessly and noisily as she did when I bought her less than 3 years ago at 40,000 miles and showing every sign of carrying on and refusing to die for at least another 100,000 miles if not more.
Don't get excited though ... I am still Tivless and look like remaining so as just after Xmas I changed jobs for something that is more along the lines of what I wanted to be doing - tech support for the manufacturer of a product I used to sell - and in doing so not only turned down an obscene payrise offer from my previous employer to get me to stay on but also took an £8k pay *CUT* just to get the job!
Anyhoo ... I'm now on a wonderfull (!) company car scheme where I get a basic diesel Vectra or I can chip in extra myself each month for something a little less suicide-inducing and I'm afraid to say that I'm currently looking at something as far away from that wuffly V8 burble that I love so much as it's possible to get ... I've found out that my company (who - as with most others - try to stop you getting *ANYTHING* at all affordable and fun on the company scheme) haven't noticed that Mazda's RX-8 isn't really a 1,300cc car and therefore I can get a 190hp RX-8 for an additional £120 a month or a 230hp RX-8 for an additional £150 a month.
Of course that leaves me with two major problems...
1) Can I afford to chuck in either £120 or £150 given I've just taken an £8k pay cut?
2) There's no RX-8 forum on PH!!
Anyway - to everyone I know on here I hope you're all OK and keeping well - last I heard was that Nuggs had been a quick worker and was getting hitched (or was it just that he'd found someone that would have him and was grabbing the chance before she realised?
) - and hopefully catch up with you soon now that I hopefully might start having a bit of time to get back on here again!

See if you can get the 150 bhp Diesel Vectra. Don't write the car off completely, we replaced our Tamora with a Vectra (admitedly a VXR).
I can get the 150 CDTi rather than the "standard" 120 CDTi for something like an extra £20 a month (contribution from me) or thereabouts ...
... I did ask about an Astra VXR but they wanted about an extra £180 a month for one of those.
Alternatively I could have sourced the car myself and got a Focus ST very cheap through my father in law but my employer has a cap at 2.2 litres on petrol engined cars...
Main problem is they get a stonking deal on their baseline vehicle and buy in the Vectra CDTi 120 at something like £13k which is well over £4.5k off list price - so if you want anything else (which they obviously don't get such a deal on) then it costs you heavily.

I have driven the 120 BHP Vectra (A courtesy car from the TVR dealer) and it was surprisingly good (we had it for so long it was the reason we ended up looking at a Vectra when we enough was enough with the TVR).
The 150 bhp car is very good and I have read reports of people being shocked at the 150 bhp engine in an Astra (Triple Eight are building 100 200bhp versions of the car in association with a Vauxhall Dealer for a £120 premium).
I would seriously recommend you have a test drive in the car before writing it off. A shame about the Astra VXR, I drove one of those 2 weeks ago as a potential replacement in the future for our Citroen and all I can say is OMG!!!!!!! Very impressive indeed.

I would seriously recommend you have a test drive in the car before writing it off. A shame about the Astra VXR, I drove one of those 2 weeks ago as a potential replacement in the future for our Citroen and all I can say is OMG!!!!!!! Very impressive indeed.

...a somewhat ironic comment given that three days after getting my "long term Vauxhall demonstrator" (a rather acceptably equipped Astra Elite) I sneezed violently going into Telford services on the M54 to get fuel and put the bugger into those high concrete kerbs - that was over a month ago and it's still being fixed!

Yeah - I know they're impressive but at the end of the day they're still a front wheel drive car with 240hp that looks like an Astra.
(They do look pretty good though in "tarts red".) I'm *REALLY* tempted by the 230hp RX-8 (couldn't find a dealer with a 190 anywhere so have no idea what they're like to drive) as that howl at 9,000 rpm is just superb! (And the sizeable tab for the fuel and oil consumption gets picked up by the company.)

...pray tell me more! (Or point me to a URL please.) I had a quick google and found their general website but could only find their modded AstraVan and their Astra Turbo Coupe.

If you want to find out first hand of peoples Astra VXR experiences pop over to www.vxronline.co.uk. There is once chap who has already has given his car a stage 2 upgrade and it's running at 280-290 bhp.

Problem is I have to have my sensible head on right now and get something as a company car - that's why I'm toying with the RX as "they" will be paying for the fuel, oil and servicing - trying not to get too distracted at the moment by the really fun stuff.
