Loose wheel nuts!!!!

Used the Chim to go out for a meal with the wife on Friday night and whilst driving there noticed a knocking noise when ever i turned left. Sounded and felt like the exhaust knocking on the body. Checked under the car today and could not find anything wrong but still had the knocking noise. Looked in the bible and it stated "loose wheel nuts may be the problem(it happens more than you might think)". Only had the car serviced 300 miles ago so thought this would be unlikely but checked the wheel nuts anyway and found that 3 of the 4 on the front nearside wheel were loose and required at least 1 turn to tighten .

Cured the knocking noise which was good but now i am a bit worried why the nuts can work loose that easily and whether this is a common problem. Anyone else had the same problem?.

Unlikely they "worked loose". Either not tightened, or loosened.

Car is garaged most of the time so is unlikely that they were loosened. Would hope they were properly tightened at service and certainly did not notice any knocking noise for last 300 miles which included a rather spirited Hants meet a couple of weekends ago.

Blimey....I just noticed something similar today when turning left ... havent done many miles since the last service either. shant be driving it until Ive had a good look at the wheelnuts !

This has always been one of my worries with any high performance car. I've seen a wheel come off a car and it aint pretty. I was just coming out of a shop as the car that past me lost the nearside rear.

It got compressed in the arch then fired straight up about 30ft in the air and came down on the roof of a parked car. Luckily no one was hurt. The brake disc scoured a lovely groove into the tarmac too.

I probably check my wheel nuts fortnightly. Never found them to be loosened at all, but I still check.

Shite. I have never heard of that before! I always check after a new tyre but obviously you hope that the garage does actually check things like that. Especially for £400 every 6 months or so!

Well the good news is I checked my nuts and everythings nice and tight.... bad news is I still have a knocking noise an full lock when reversing so I guess its time to hand over some more beer tokens to my favourite indie *sigh*
