Bear with me on this.....

Bought a hosting package with HostingCompany-A, in this package I host Site-A & Site-B.

HostingCompany-A is taken over by HostingCompany-B.

My friend buys a domain with HostingCompany-B, asks me to design a website & host it.

So now we have MyDomain hosting Site-A, Site-B & MyFriendsSite.
DNS settings on MyFriendsDomain point to MyDomain. Everything looks fine & dandy.

Last month all domains were migrated to new servers.

Now we have MyDomain hosting Site-A & Site-B. MyFriendsDomain hosting MyFriendsSite.

To my mind the website I have designed has been moved to somewhere that I have no control over. In effect it's been stolen.

Surely this can't be right, can it?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated

I'm with you all the way up to where you introduce "mydomain" and then I'm lost I'm afraid...

Maybe it's my terminology, I'm a little naive in these matters

What I'm trying to say is that a website I designed and hosted has now been moved away from my hosting package without my consent. Surely this isn't allowed?

Depends on who initiated the move from your domain to his.

If it was your mate, who discovered that his registrar offered free webspace that mean the wasnt in debt to you for hosting, then he owes you the agreed amount for design, and then you shake hands and move on.
If it was his registrar (v unlikely), the he just alters the A record again, surely?

If by registrar you mean hosting company, then yes they have done this of their own accord, the move occurred at the same time as the migration to new servers.

If a site has been moved without the authorisation of the domain owner then yes, it's wrong. Have you confirmed that your mate hasn't been given the details of the new hosting account, such as password and ftp address?

I am the domain owner where this site was hosted, so yes they moved it without my consent. They now say it is nothing to do with me as I don't own the domain they have moved it to (my friend does).

He has always had the password etc, to access his domain (As in fact do I as it was me that set his DNS settings to point to my domain when the site was hosted under my domain).

I just can't get my head round how they think they can move something like this without my permission.

I'm a little confused by this, bear with me while I try and lay it out as I see it.

You designed a site for your mate.

You hosted his site on part of your webspace.

He owned the domain name, that was pointed at your bit of webspace.

Is that right?

Your hosting comapny update their servers, and suddenly his whole site has vanished from your webspace, yet is still visible on the net, at his domain name?

Is that right?

If so, looks like your mate has arranged with them to move the site. He has full access to the site & the previous hosting, so presumably managed to convince the hosting company that he was the effective owner of the domain & site, and has arranged his hosting.

Not a lot you can do about it. I don't think that he has "stolen" your site, as the impression I get is that you gifted the site design & hosting to him as a mate.

Not a lot of comeback really. Write it down to experience & move on.

My 2p's worth

You're right on the first two counts.

My friend has not asked the hosting company to move the site, they've done this of their own accord. That's what I'm annoyed at. It wasn't gifted to my friend, he has paid me to design and host the site.

In that case, speak to the hosting company & find out whats caused this.

They should re-instate it back how it was before.

SO you've been paid for the site, and paid for the hosting. It's now been moved to a new server that you're not paying for and it still works. I fail to see the problem here.

So its now under control of space your mate has paid for? well if its an issue just loginto his account with him and update the domain records after sticking a copy of it back in your web space..

I see the problem...

You effectivly have copyrighted content/code his domain points to.

This data was removed from your webspace and placed onto someone elses webspace without your permission.

If company B didnt buy or own company A they couldnt do this at all, they assumed your friendsdomain owned the content hosted on your webspace, thats bad practice. They've effectivly given him the content without your permision and removed it from your control.

Cheers Rob, that's exactly what my gripe is

..and why i'll be transferring the domains to a new hosting company in the near future
