Guys, I need help for a small repair on my 993.

There is a small (20p coin size) bubble of corrosion at the bottom n/s corner of the windscreen which I need to get sorted. I understand this to be a fairly common problem with 993's so I'd like to find a bodyshop that has already done a few jobs like this and knows what they are doing.

Whilst it's a small area to repair, it's in a tricky spot meaning windscreen replacement, and I have read that just getting the windscreen back in properly can be tricky.

I've had quotes from two bodysops already, and whilst the proposed charges are okay, I'm really looking for a recomendation from somebody that has had this job done.

It appears that although the repair area is small, they have to spray (lacquer coat only I think) the entire panel. And the panel is not just the bit around the windscreen but the whole roof and down as far as the engine cover.

Any helpful hints or recomendations gratefully received.

Also, does anybody know what causes the corrosion in this area or what needs doing to ensure it doesn't happen again?

I'm near Cambridge so the closer the better. But am prepared to travel if necessary.

When a similar problem on mine was done, it also needed a new windscreen (though I wanted that anyway so I was prepared for it) and the corrosion was more extensive than the visible area - I think it tends to creep around under the windscreen.

Might be worth checking that they have allowed for this in their quotes? And the windscren? I'm pretty sure the windscreen can be removed and refitted, so removing it doesn't definitely mean you'll need a new one.

Mine was done in London so I assume not that convenient for you?

Thanks guys,

Interesting that I can get to all three of the firms you mention as I have an office in London, an office near York and I live near Cambridge.

sdm - Have you used Barr-tech? It's just that one of my quotes is from them but the guy who gave me the quote never seems to be there so it left me worrying about their reliability? It took three attempts to get the car looked at so they could quote because Nino was 'out' and nobody else does quotes. And since then I have phoned three times to speak to him and been told he is 'out'.

Tertius - I will definitely get the screen replaced as it is a bit cloudy on one edge which I believe means it is delaminating? How long did they have your car to do this type of repair?

That's why I had mine replaced. Also it was delaminating at the point the radio aerial enters the screen and reception was accordingly pretty crap.

RGA in Vauxhall did the bodywork, but they sub-contracted the screen replacement to one of the nationals, and they (RGA) made them fit it three times before they (RGA) were satisfied - this took about a week as each time you have to wait for the glue to set before you take it out again .

I know what you mean about getting hold of Nino, he does tend to be busy all the time.
If you can talk to Nino or Tino they are nice guys, very interested in the cars and willing to talk about them.
I've had bodywork done by them about 3 years ago and it's all holding up well, going in at the weekend to have the B pillar (latch plate is going a bit) replaced.

I'm having somebody work done on my 944 at the moment by TWG in Peterborough (01733 332911) - haven't seen it yet so I can't comment on their quality yet but their quote was considerably cheaper than Barr Tech. IIRC gadgit (sp) had some work (not bodywork though) done by them and was pleased with the result.
