Off to North Weald tomorrow, so wanted to get something settled in my mind regarding air pressure...

I always fill the tyres when they are cold, but by the time I get to the track tomorrow the tyres will be warmed up well on the motorway, so if I want to up the pressure by 10% when I get to the track, how should I judge it - 10% on top of the higher pressure at the time I presume rather than the base pressure?

On a similar vein, over the winter periods I've noticed the pressures drop upto 4psi over all four corners due to contraction of the gas etc. I've always presumed that you leave it be, but a friend pumps them back to the standard figures when this happens - which is the way to go?

One last thing, I tried four different pressure guages yesterday, two needle (one plastic, one metal), the analogue guage in a cheapy pump and my good (hopefully) analogue guage. No two gave the same results and the results varied by 5psi - which guage is therefore the best and most accurate to use? Are there any guages that take temperature into account for providing readings?

Sorry for all the questions, I'll be quiet now

I'd suggest:
If you could get a small bottle of liquid shoe polish you could mark each tyre at the shoulder area before your first run, then check to see how much the tyre rolls over . Then raise pressures for excessive roll.

If you aren't driving the car, keep the tyres overinflated.
if you do, drive then maintain recommended pressures.

Use one gauge, only that gauge, and keep it with the tyres.

Off to North Weald tomorrow

May i ask what your doing at north weald tommorow as the TVRCC SC is not untill the 19th
are you visiting Andy at first Lotus.

I monitor my tyres constantly during track days you will need to maintain 30psi
to stop tyre roll. Take a plug in tyre inflator but be prepared for a long wait as to reach 30psi x 4 takes an eon. 27psi cold will reach 30 and more.

The weather looks good for you tommorow at North Weald But the wind will be bitter and there is no shelter.

Yep, off for a day of track tutorage with Andy (as CarLimits not 1st Lotus) before the track day season starts as I want to go over a few things before exploring the outer limits on track.

Also been advised 30psi by Andy at APM so will be going for that, good to have someone else giving the same figures though.

Do you check and release after after each session if it goes over 30psi then?

Foods Good. Andys Good. Days Good. TIP dont turn in to quick, he thinks its funny watching you pick lumps of rubber off your tyres.

Are you taking a passenger. If so They will need spare underwear.

ENJOY..

edited to say if you put 28psi in at the Shell or BP garage by the A414 turn off on the M11 and fuel 3/4 up NOT FULL that will do you all day. You will have some waiting around so your tyres will cool. Its up to you how hard you want to push it and how much bottle you have the sky is the limit, its impossible to hit anything.

To be fair he is also running a TVR (although slightly lighter than my Cerbera) which is most likely to be on 18" spiders as mine is, so reasonably well placed to comment on what I'm likely to need.

Had a fantastic day, will certainly be back there to practice what I've learnt and move onto the next level. It was great to be taught properly and realise why what I'd been told on track days never quite clicked - the improvement you make round the high speed corner using Andy's technique was amazing.

Not so sure my tyres enjoyed it quite as much though, my brand new Eagle F1 looks decidedly used on the top corners

Glad you had a good day. I not telling you how to suck eggs far from it, but your next step is a track day at Dodington with a whole
private tuition day with Micheal Cane. He is worth every penny. I done mine through Goldtrack but booked him myself.

see you at snets then on the 24th April

Was thinking of a similar thing myself as the next step on the ladder to Schumacherdom so thanks for the advice as I didn't realise Cainey did private tuition.

Should be booking Snett later today, looking forward to having a rematch after my last visit in the V6 S, a pit more power down the main straight will be handy
