a quick and probably numpty question

Can anyone explain why the images coming out of my camera are not of a "standard" aspect ratio?
Is it just because, and so I'm going to have to resize/crop them to print them at a standard ratio (i.e. 7x5)? Or am I missing something somewhere?

First up... DH2 Have you got a D2H ? (That'd be a bit spooky - or possibly dyslexic)
Secondly - DSLRs/Compacts take pics at different aspects. Mine (D2X) takes 7 x 4.6 - What body is it?
edited to add my compact takes MUCH more 'square' pics - which are a bit of a pain to crop for paper... but not for screen

erm, no. I used to be called "moomin", but felt like a change to a name that lots of people know me by anyway.

350D. so I guess the answer is that I need to crop them for paper - time to bring out the GIMP and try to work out how to crop to a ratio...

3:2 is the standard ratio for 35mm film, when you get prints done on the high street, they just crop to fit so there's no borders (or even borders).
IIRC compacts tend to be 4:3 for some reason so are a bit squarer.
For the possible origins and the relationship to the golden rectangle, check here:

hmmm yes, twas indeed a numpty question since the ratio of 6x4 (1.5:1) is not the same as 7x5 (1.4:1), obviously, dur.
the 350D pulls a 1.5:1 image from the sensor (in large JPEG mode at least), so that's the 6x4 35mm standard ratio.
kinda obvious when you stop to think about it.
thanks for the help.
