Lan 2 Lan VPN connection
Discussion
I've got a small co that wants to connect 2 offices together. They've got adsl at both ends. so a vpn tunnel using the adsl modem/ routers would seem like a plan.
NowI've done it with bigger kit but not the bottom feeder stuff any one got any experience.. the adsl provider are suggesting draytek vigor 2800's but i've never used them. Does anyone have any experience with these or similar priced kit.
you should be able to set the vpn tunnel up between the two modem/routers so its transparent to the users on the lan.
cheers

Vigors are fine...even cheaper to do the same job Netgear DG834G....dont worry about using mid-high VPN boxes with hardware acceleration - you are generally limited to 256Kbps upstream anyway on ADSL so no point
mmm everytime i've used netgear, they work fine at first and then stop. I might consider if the budgets really limited but as this is a low value/favour job I dont want to risk kit thats going to have me in every 10 mins to sort it
so my criteria is
a) will it work
b) how easy is it to set up
c) will it still be working in 3 months
cheers

yep - they support 5 x IPSEC tunnel termination and are VPNC certified for interop with other vendors solution
You need firmware 2.10.22 or above

Draytek vigors offer very good support for point to point
VPN tunnels in my experience. We use vigor 2600's to connect
4 remote sites with very few running problems once set up. They
can also be easily set up to allow access to remote workers using
laptops (or pc's at home or anywhere!) with the built in windows vpn
client. They cost a bit more than the boggo adsl router, but the
superb extra features are well worth the money, especially as this
is a business environment.
(No I don't work for them!)

Set Up a sonicwall TZ170 at both ends. You can give them secure wireless as well if you use the wireless version. This will allow one VPN tunnel. If the company gets any bigger, then just replace one of the TZ170s with the Pro 2040 at the "home office". You can, then, have multiple branch office tunnels at the home office and recycle the out of service TZ170 to another branch...
