944 S2/turbo ownership
Discussion
Hi guys, just a query on what ownership of a 944s2/turbo se is like in terms of maintainence, MPG, etc. Can these cars (as they are 15+ years old) be insured on a more reasonable 'classic' policy? Also, as you can buy a nice one of these for £6-7k have they pretty much bottomed out in terms of depreciation? Assuming you get all servicing and work done to maintain the car at a good specialist will the car in say 2 years still be around £6k mark? Any info would be appreciated.

From your profile it looks like you are already experienced in Turbo ownership.
I have had an S2 for six months. Bought For around 5k with around 150k miles, although the engine has only done 70ish. I would guess it will have cost around 2k to fully get it up to scratch, but I am fussy! Silly things like fog lights, clocks etc seem disproportionatly expensive for an old car. Servicing is as cheap as most moderns. Insurance around £400 on a std policy. Fuel consumption ranges from 20 to 32 mpg depending on how and where you drive it. Depreciation would, I think, continue for some years. Just look at the prices of 2.5 Lux s.
On balance it costs a little more than my old 2.7 to run but is much more of a car for the money. Provided you don't expect to run it for peanuts they are a great fun car.
I hope this is some help.

I picked up a nice clean S2 for £5K. A turbo will cost more. Classic insurance at £180 and it does well over 30mpg crusing on the motorways.
I guess everything depreciates but your talking hundreds of pounds per year, not thousands. I intend to do the regular spanner work myself and let a specialist do any bigger jobs.
As allways the trick is to get a good car to start with and enjoy it

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah i ran a turbo se but it was about 10 years ago. Cant remember running costs from back then, although it needed a head gasket and PAS rack recon both of which hurt the wallet! im kind of edging towards an S2 as i think it will be a little better as a day to day car. The turbo was always fun but at times lag got frustrating. Boost enhancer may help although ive never driven one with that mod? So average mpg 25 mix of round town and A roads? What are the criteria for classic insurance? (is there an annual miles limit?). Actually one concern is finding a good car, alot of the autotrader ones look abused or far from standard. Anyone recommend a good specialist to buy from?

maintenence, not too bad. it is a sports car however so needs looking after regularly, and bills can mount up quickly with unforseen stuff (worst case scenario -- new cams) routine service £200-500 depending on belts, new clutch would be £700-900, pads and discs £200-300. tyres £90-130 each. mpg 20-25 depending on R foot pressure. plenty of classic policies around provided you are prepared to limit mileage (maybe 6K miles or less per annum though insurers vary wildly). yes you can buy a lovely one for 6-7K. yes, depreciation is plateauing but I think after another 2 years you will be looking to get 4-5K back. regular service history from reputable source is vital.
I have classic insurance. Limited to 3K miles, but for another £10 I could have a 5K limit. I used RH, they advitise in the porsche mag's. I have a every day car and am 40 (but could pass for early 30's
)
I think the S2 is a slightly better option if running costs are a concern and you dont need turbo performance to enjoy the car.
But the one thing to allways remember with running any car is that a perfectly good car can break something so hold some money in reserve.
